A roundup of the main sporting events involving Romanian attendance

On the first day of the European Weightlifting Championships in Chişinău, Romanian athlete, Mihaela Cambei, on Sunday won three gold medals. In the contest of the 49 kilogram category, she won gold in the snatch event after lifting 85 kilograms and also compelled recognition in the jerk and total contests with 105 and 190 kilograms, respectively. In the same category, another Romanian athlete, Cosmina Pană, reaped bronze in the jerk event with 76 kilograms, while Madalina Miron, also from Romania, became bronze medalist in the 45 kilogram category with 71 kilograms lifted. Romania was represented in the aforementioned competition by 15 athletes, 8 boys and 7 girls.

Romania’s national female side has qualified for the World Championships due at the end of this year. Our athletes secured a 31-17 win in the second round of the play-off against Italy in Bistrita, central Romania on Sunday. Our side also clinched a win in the first round in Italy 30-21. The best player of the side coached by Florentin Pera, was Lorena Gabriela Ostase, with 6 goals. Goalie Daciana Hosu also had 7 successful interventions. Among Italy’s best scorers was a player of Romanian extraction, Bianca Ioana Bărbosu, who scored twice.

Not so good news from tennis, though as Romania’s side has lost the two matches it played at the end of the week in Group A of the qualifiers for the Billie Jean King Cup in Tokyo. On Friday, the Romanians came a cropper to Canada, 3-0, and on Saturday, they lost to Japan with the same score. In the singles contest, Romania was represented by Miriam Bulgaru and Anca Todoni. In the doubles, Mara Gae paired up with Georgia Andreea Crăciun, on Friday and with Ilina Dalina Amariei on Saturday. Japan eventually won the group after its 2-1 win on the 2023 champion Canada. Japan has thus qualified for the competition’s final tournament due in China in September.

Last weekend saw several football matches counting towards the fourth leg of Romania’s Superleague. On Friday, Poli Iasi secured a 1-0 win against Gloria Buzau, while in Sibiu, the match pitting local side Hermannstadt against Petrolul Ploieşti ended in a one-all draw. On Saturday, in Sfântu Gheorghe, Farul Constanţa clinched a 4-1 win against local side Sepsi, while on Sunday in Clinceni, Unirea Slobozia outperformed UTA 2-1. Monday will see the leg’s last match FC Botoşani versus Oţelul Galaţi.

The fight for the first position in the ranking is fierce. On Saturday, Dynamo Bucharest obtained a 4-2 win against Universitatea Cluj, while the Sunday’s match in Craiova opposing local side Universitatea to FCSB ended in a goaless draw. Before the leg’s last match on Monday, which is opposing CFR Cluj to Rapid Bucharest, FCSB tops the ranking, three points ahead of the sides on the second and third positions, CFR and Universitatea Craiova.
