The first stage of the Rowing World Cup took place this weekend in Seville, Spain. Four Romanian crews made it to the podium on Sunday, winning one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. In the women’s double sculls, Simona Radiș and Ancuța Bodnar claimed the gold medals. The men’s pair made up of Ștefan Berariu and Florin Lehaci took home silver, finishing just behind the New Zealand boat. In the women’s quad sculls, Emanuela Ciotău, Alexandra Ungureanu, Andrada Moroșanu and Mariana-Laura Dumitru secured third place on the podium, with Germany taking the gold and Great Britain claiming silver. Another bronze went to the men’s eight (8+) crew, consisting of Cosmin Iulian Pleșescu, Fabrizio-Alexandru Scripcariu, Florin Arteni, Mugurel Semciuc, Constantin Adam, Sergiu Bejan, Andrei Mândrilă, and Laurențiu Danciu, coxed by Irina Despa. The Netherlands won gold, while Great Britain finished in second place. The next World Cup stage will take place in two weeks in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The third and final stage is scheduled for late June in Lucerne. This will be followed in late July by the European Championships in Varese, Italy, and then the World Championships, scheduled for August 24–30 in Amsterdam.

Romania has delivered exceeding expectations at the European Minifootball Championship, currently hosted by Slovakia. The Romanian footballers won Group D after a 1-1 draw with Spain, followed by a 1-0 victory over England and a 3-0 win against Georgia. They followed that up with an epic 7-0 blowout against Austria in the round of 16. Romania will face Serbia in the quarterfinals this Tuesday.

The domestic season of the Romanian football SuperLeague has drawn to a close following the relegation and promotion playoff finals. Farul Constanța successfully maintained their spot in the top flight on Sunday, defeating Chindia Târgoviște on penalties at home in Ovidiu. The first leg in Dâmbovița had ended in a 3-3 draw, while the return leg finished 1-1 after regular time and extra time. In the other playoff matchup, second-tier FC Voluntari earned promotion to the SuperLeague at the expense of FC Hermannstadt from Sibiu. Though the Transylvanians won the first leg 3-2 in Sibiu, the Ilfov-based team bounced back with a dominant 3-0 victory in the return leg. Additionally, Corvinul Hunedoara and Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe have also earned promotion to the top tier, while Unirea Slobozia and Metaloglobus were directly relegated. (VP)
