In Group C of the first preliminary round of the 2027 European Women’s Basketball Championship, Romania will face Poland on Saturday in Sosnowiec. In the first games of the group, Romania beat Cyprus 75-62 in Limassol on Wednesday, while Poland defeated Slovakia 62-55 in Bratislava. On Tuesday, the team coached by Cătălin Tănase will face Slovakia at home in Ploiești. The top two teams in each group and the three best third-placed teams, i.e. 17 teams in total, will qualify for the second round of the qualifiers.

Moving on to handball, weekend marks the eighth round of the Champions League group stage for women’s teams. It is the last round of this year, with the competition set to resume in January. On Saturday, CSM Bucharest will play at home against the Norwegian team Sola. The two teams also met last Sunday in Stavanger, with the Romanian champions winning 38-30. CSM currently ranks fifth in Group B.

On Sunday, Gloria Bistrița will face German team Borussia Dortmund away. The Transylvanian team won 36-32 at home last Sunday. They are currently in third place in Group A, behind only Győr from Hungary and Metz from France, two of the strongest teams on the continent. We remind you that at the end of this phase of the competition, the top two teams in each group will go directly to the quarterfinals. The teams ranked 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th in each group will compete in play-off matches for the remaining four places in the quarterfinals. The teams ranked 7th and 8th will leave the competition.

On Saturday, Romania’s rugby team will face the United States in a test match in Bucharest. This is the Oaks’ second friendly match this fall, after beating Canada 31-21 last Saturday, also in Bucharest. A test match against Uruguay will follow on Saturday, November 22.

The most anticipated sporting event of the weekend is the match between Romania’s national football team and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will take place on Saturday in Zenica. The match is part of the World Cup qualifiers, with the final tournament to be held next year in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. In order to still hope for one of the top two places in the final standings of Group H, Romania must win. While the chances of finishing in first place are only theoretical, second place is within reach and would allow coach Mircea Lucescu’s players to go into the play-offs as top seeds. Thus, Romania could theoretically have an easier path in the fight for qualification than the one already secured by the playoff spot obtained after winning its Nations League group in the spring.
