2024 European and local elections – exit polls UPDATE

Nicusor Dan has won a new mandate as Bucharest mayor.

Exit polls. European and local elections were held in Romania on Sunday. According to the Curs – Avangarde exit polls, made public after the voting, the alliance formed by the two parties in power  – the Social Democratic Party and the National Liberal Party  – won by a wide margin, of 54%, the European Parliament elections. Next comes the nationalist party AUR (the Alliance for the Union of Romanians) with 14% and ADU  (the United Right Alliance) with 11%. The Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) got 5% of the votes.  The Social Democratic Party (PSD) won the elections and the result of the voting for Bucharest mayor is a lesson of democracy, the PSD leader, Marcel Ciolacu said Sunday. The measures taken by the PSD have been appreciated by the Romanians, Ciolacu also said, at the party’s headquarters. In turn, the Liberal leader, Nicolae Ciuca, said the vote in the European and local elections is a victory of Romanians and a lesson of democracy. He thanked the citizens who cast their vote and opted for the European values. Nicusor Dan, the Bucharest mayor in office, has said he is overwhelmed by the trust that Bucharesters showed him. He also said he would call a local referendum, with the support of the General Council, on how to divide the budget between the Bucharest Town Hall and the town halls of the capital city’s 6 districts.  Voter turnout for the European Parliament  was 52.39%, and for the local elections 50%. Romania will be represented in Brussels by 33 MEPs.  It’s a busy election year in Romania in 2024, with presidential and parliamentary elections to come next, in September and December, respectively.
