TALKS On Wednesday, education trade unions in Romania rejected the latest version of the draft law on the payment of public sector employees proposed by the interim government, deeming the entire annex concerning the education sector a sign of “disregard” for staff in the field. Meanwhile, representatives from ministries and political parties are holding a final round of technical discussions on the bill, though the chances of reaching an agreement are slim following Tuesday’s political negotiations—convened by the Presidency—which yielded no results. The bill must be adopted, promulgated, and published in the Official Gazette by Monday, August 31, for Romania to access 770 million Euros in funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan warned that while every possible compromise with the European Commission had been explored, the unions’ financial demands exceed the budget’s capacity.

ALLEGATIONS Romania’s interim Prime Minister, Liberal Ilie Bolojan, has announced that he will speak today with the Deputy Secretary General of the Government—his party colleague, Cristina Trăilă—regarding the allegations brought against her by anti-corruption prosecutors. When asked if Trăilă would have to step down, Bolojan replied that he did not wish to condemn anyone before having more information about the case. Prosecutors from the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) have initiated criminal proceedings against Trăilă for complicity in the use of influence or authority to obtain money, goods, or other undue benefits for herself or for another person. According to prosecutors, over November 3rd and 4th, 2025, Trăilă—in her capacity as Deputy Secretary General of the Government—allegedly supported efforts by Mihai Barbu, the former head of the PNL branch in Vaslui (eastern Romania), to exert influence over the president of the National Sanitary-Veterinary Agency. The aim was to replace the director of the Vaslui Sanitary-Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate with an individual favored by the administrator of a poultry farming company.

FOOTBALL Romania’s football champions, Universitatea Craiova, takes on Ararat-Armenia in an away match on Thursday counting towards the decisive round of the Europa League’s playoffs. The first match ended in a one-all draw, but should the Romanians lose, they will have a place in Europe’s third football competition, the Conference League.

DIPLOMACY The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that Romania’s Chargé d’Affaires in Moscow was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday. “We presume this summons comes in response to the diplomatic measures adopted by Romania following the wave of drone incidents caused by the Russian Federation’s war of aggression in Ukraine,” the Romanian ministry stated. In July, Romania’s ambassador to Russia, Cristian Istrate, was recalled to Bucharest for consultations following incidents involving unmanned aerial vehicles entering Romanian airspace. Additionally, Bucharest declared a Russian diplomat *persona non grata*, while Moscow announced that these actions would meet with an “appropriate response.”

NORDIS DIICOT prosecutors (Romania’s anti-terrorism and anti-mafia directorate) have expanded the criminal investigation in the “Nordis” case following the filing of another 50 criminal complaints by over a hundred individuals who claim to be victims of real estate fraud. Additional damages amounting to over 42 million lei, 14 million Euros, and 17,000 dollars have been calculated. The case—in which former PSD MP Laura Vicol and her husband, businessman Vladimir Ciorbă, are among those under investigation—covers numerous offenses, including the formation of an organized criminal group, money laundering, tax evasion, embezzlement, and fraud with particularly serious consequences. Last year, DIICOT announced that 700 complaints involving 850 victims had been filed in the case, with damages estimated at approximately 75 million euros. The criminal investigation has now been extended to the administrators of a group of companies and to four firms, on charges of fraud with particularly serious consequences.
