Political consultations at Cotroceni

Romania’s President, Nicuşor Dan, is expecting the leaders of parliamentary political parties at the Presidential Palace on Monday for fresh consultations regarding the designation of a prime minister candidate. The talks come after Liberal MEP Siegfried Mureșan, the third prime minister designated by the president in the past five months, failed to secure Parliament’s vote of confidence.

Dan has asked the parties to come with viable solutions and ruled out the presence of AUR, the nationalist opposition, in the structure of a new government because, as he explained, doing so would damage Romania’s relationship with its external partners. At the same time, the president gave assurances that both the country’s pro-Western orientation and its assumed financial commitments will be maintained.

Furthermore, Nicuşor Dan said that organizing snap elections is not a solution to the current political crisis and told parliamentary parties that in a democracy, one cannot govern without a genuine willingness to negotiate, compromise and build a majority.

Flu vaccination season underway

The flu vaccination season has begun in Romania, with medical professionals warning that as the weather cools and children return to school, the risk of spreading viral infections increases significantly. The influenza vaccine can be obtained from pharmacies with a medical prescription. Vulnerable individuals, such as children, pregnant women, the elderly and the chronically ill, receive the vaccine free of charge, while other patients benefit from a 50% discount.

Administration can take place either in a family doctor’s office or at an authorized center or pharmacy. Specialists advise that it is preferable to get vaccinated before the circulation of flu viruses intensifies. At the first signs of a cold, doctors advise people to stay home to prevent the outbreak of local clusters.

The fight for EU cohesion and agricultural funds

Romania and 16 other European Union Member States have requested the preservation of funds dedicated to agriculture and cohesion policy in the upcoming European budget for the 2028–2034 period. In an online post, Romanian President Nicuşor Dan said that the request was transmitted via a letter addressed to Micheál Martin, the Prime Minister of Ireland, the country currently holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The 17 signatory states belonging to the Friends of Cohesion Group support maintaining the current level of funding for cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy, alongside the allocation of additional resources for defense, security, competitiveness, energy and connectivity. Romania is advocating for a larger European budget designed to narrow development gaps between EU Member States.

Bucharest Stock Exchange and economic outlook

The Bucharest Stock Exchange’s main index, BET, closed this week up by approximately 2%, following five consecutive weeks of decline caused by the protracted political crisis and the risk of a sovereign rating downgrade for Romania by Standard & Poor’s. However, S&P maintained Romania within the investment-grade category.

S&P experts consider it essential for a government to be formed in Bucharest that will adopt a credible budgetary plan for the next two years. The institution estimates that Romania’s economy will shrink by 0.5% this year, before growing by 2.25% in 2027. The budget deficit is expected to drop from 6.25% of GDP in 2026 to 5.8% next year, while average inflation is projected at 8.3% this year. Prior to Standard & Poor’s announcement regarding Romania’s rating, the Leu-Euro exchange rate climbed to an all-time high of 5.3447 lei per 1 Euro.

MOBEX military exercise in Bucharest and Ilfov

The Romanian Defense Ministry is launching a new MOBEX exercise on Monday addressing reservists in Bucharest and the neighboring Ilfov County. Those summoned must report to military units precisely on the date and time specified in their documents. The exercise lasts a single day for each summoned individual.

During this interval, civilians will undergo light infantry weapon firing sessions and familiarize themselves with the military’s current armored hardware. They will also participate in a series of workshops, including medical training, protection against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents, as well as weapon- and specialty-specific instruction.

Participants will receive a certificate confirming their participation in the exercise, entitling them to a day of paid leave from their workplace. According to the law, participation in these periodic exercises is mandatory, and those who refuse to accept orders or fail to report to the unit face administrative fines. (VP)
