Last week was full of events involving the participation of athletes from Romania. Unfortunately our female gymnasts walked away with no medal from the World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia and our female tennis players managed only lackluster shows in competitions.
However, two footballers managed to compel international recognition. They are Razvan Marin of the Greek side AEK Athens and Andrei Ratiu from the Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, who scored in the second leg of the continental competition UEFA Conference League.
Rațiu scored out of a penalty shot sealing the points in the away match against the Swedish side Häcken. The Romanian fullback entered the pitch nine minutes from time and got a yellow card in the extra time. Marin played for 68 minutes and scored the fourth goal for his side against the Scottish team Aberdeen in a match AEK won 6-0. For his performance, Radio Romania International has designated him Athlete of the Week.
Răzvan Marin was born in Bucharest on May 23rd 1996. His father, Petre Marin, used to play in the first football league for sides like Sportul Studențesc, FC Național and Steaua Bucharest and won 9 caps for the Romanian national football side. His son, Răzvan, took up football at the Bucharest football club, Pro Luceafărul. He joined the Football Academy founded by the Romanian football legend, Gheorghe Hagi, and made his debut in the first football league with Viitorul Constanța. He played for Viitorul from 2013 until 2017, then he got transferred to the Belgian side, Standard Liège. From there he went to Ajax Amsterdam and then to Italian side Cagliari. From Cagliari, he went to Empoli and then he joined AEK Athens of Greece.
Razvan won his first cap for the national Romanian football side in August 2016 for a match against Montenegro in the preliminaries of World Cup 2018. He was part of the Romanian lineup in October 2016 in the match against Armenia, when he scored a goal enabling the Romanians to win 5-0. He has won 50 caps for the Romanian side and scored 12 times.
