These days are seeing the last major tennis tournament of the year: the US Open. The competition at Flushing Meadows is the year’s fourth Grand Slam after those in Melbourne, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and comes with huge prizes for the participants.
Romania was represented on the main draw only in the women’s contests. Jaqueline Cristian, Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Sorana Cirstea participated in the first round of the singles. Ruse had the bad luck to play in the first round the fifteenth seeded Daria Kasatkina, of Australia, to whom she lost 7-5, 6-1. In the first round Sorana outperformed Argentine player Sierra Solana, 7-5, 6-0, but met eleventh-seeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in the second round. The Czech challenger secured a win 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. Jaqueline Cristian managed the best performance by making to the competition’s third round, which is a first for her in the prestigious US competition. For her performance, Radio Romania International has designated her Athlete of the week.
In Flushing Meadows, Jaqueline met only players from the United States. In the first round she obtained a clear two-set win against Danielle Collins, 6-2, 6-0. In the second round she outperformed Ashlyn Krueger, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. She lost the third match to eighth-seeded Amanda Anisimova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. For her performance Jaqueline was awarded 237,000 dollars and 130 WTA points.
Jaqueline Cristian was born on June fifth, 1998, in Bucharest and made her debut in the WTA circuit at BRD Bucharest Open in 2015, in a double match together with Elena – Gabriela Ruse. She played her first WTA finals in Bucharest four years later also in a doubles match with Ruse. In March this year she won a WTA 125 tournament in Mexico. Also this year she made it to the finals of the WTA 250 tournament in Rabat, Morocco.
