Croatian film director Mate Ugrin attended the 2026 “Taifas” Festival in Timișoara (western Romania) to present his film “Petty Thieves.” The film, a co-production between Croatia, France, and Germany, won the FIPRESCI Prize in the Proxima competition at the 2026 Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The “Taifas” Balkan Film and Culture Festival (October 12-18, 2026), now in its fourth edition, invited audiences to discover films and stories from a region with which we share histories, customs, and experiences. The program featured 14 feature films, meetings with directors and actors, film and literature residencies, an evening dedicated to Balkan cuisine, as well as performances and events held at various locations across the city. The theme of this edition explored how history is preserved within personal memories, family relationships, the places we leave behind, and the stories we pass on.
