Sălaj is the county with the highest unemployment rate in north-western Romania. Here, only a quarter of the resident population is employed, the rest being pensioners, children, the unemployed and other social categories. Experts say the situation is caused by the fact that most jobs are concentrated in big cities, while opportunities are limited in rural areas. Alin Buză, president of the Employers’ Association of Sălaj, said that although there are companies willing to hire, not all unemployed people in Sălaj are interested in working, but prefer to live on the social benefits offered by the state. According to AJOFM Sălaj, many unemployed people do not even have secondary school education and are very difficult to employ because they do not prove that they have any skills in a particular trade. Alin Buză pointed out that the institution has tried to organize Romanian language skills courses, but potential beneficiaries have asked for money to attend. Despite this situation, AJOFM said it will continue programs designed to get as many unemployed people as possible into work.
Călărași county, in southern Romania, has exceeded the national average in terms of unemployment. The registered unemployment rate here was 4.8%, compared with the national average of 3.7%. The executive director of the county employment agency, Tudora Nicolae, said that the unemployment rate in the county could fall to 4-4.2% and that of the total number of people out of work, around 500 are receiving benefits. Every week, employers in Călărași send more than 200 jobs to AJOFM. The county is currently looking for doctors, insurance consultants, copywriters, construction engineers, accountants, sales agents, foremen, tractor drivers, laborers, carpet cleaners and service workers in the technical area.
