Government. The Romanian prime minister-designate, Liberal Adrian Veştea, may hold talks with PSD leaders today. Also today, the UDMR is expected to make a decision regarding its support for the future cabinet, the USR remains consistent with its decision not to form a government with the Social Democrats, and the nationalists from AUR believe that the only solution is early parliamentary elections. The prime minister-designate has declared himself determined to move forward with forming the executive and announced that he refuses to resign, as demanded by his own party’s leadership, which gave him an ultimatum to do so. Following a meeting on Monday, Liberal Party President and current interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan also announced that the PNL had decided, by a majority vote, not to support in Parliament the cabinet that his party colleague Adrian Veştea will form. The main argument was that the nomination announced on Sunday by President Nicuşor Dan was made without consulting the PNL. The Liberals accused their first vice-president of betrayal, as well as of destabilizing the party from within. Adrian Veştea does, however, have the support of prominent Liberal members, both at the national level and in the regions. However, the Liberal MPs who vote for his cabinet will lose their party membership. Furthermore, the PNL is asking the head of state to resume consultations with political parties to form a government in a transparent manner.

Deficit. Romania’s current account deficit narrowed by more than 12% in the first four months of the year, according to data released by the National Bank. Flavius Jakubowicz, president of the Association of Financial and Banking Analysts in Romania, noted that the adjustment is not the result of a strong increase in exports, but rather of a moderation in domestic demand and imports. Transportation, IT, and telecommunications services continue to generate a significant surplus in the balance of payments, and the National Bank’s foreign exchange reserves remain at a comfortable level.

EU accession. Moldova and Ukraine officially opened negotiations on accession to the European Union on Monday, at the first intergovernmental conference held in Luxembourg. They marked a historic moment by beginning work on the first thematic cluster, titled “Fundamental Values,” which covers legislation in the areas of justice, the fight against corruption, the rule of law, the functioning of democratic institutions, public administration, and economic rules. The two countries were accepted as candidates shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. The process was, however, put on hold for a time due to opposition from Hungary.

G7.The war in Ukraine is the focus of attention this morning for the leaders of the world’s major economic powers at the G7 summit in France. Representatives of the European Union, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have also been invited to the meeting. French President Emmanuel Macron hopes to secure a positive response from his American counterpart, Donald Trump, in support of Kyiv. Later in the day, the agenda for the leaders of the world’s seven major powers will include numerous sensitive issues regarding economic and trade relations, digital market regulation, and new forms of cooperation with emerging economies and strategic partners.

Sweden. The Senate in Bucharest reaffirms its support for the urgent repatriation of the Romanian minors Sara and Diana Samson in order to reunite the family, in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights. At the same time, it firmly urges the Swedish child protection authorities to review the decisions prohibiting direct contact between the two girls and their biological parents, in accordance with respect for their traditions, culture, and religion. The two minors were taken into custody several years ago by Swedish social services, following allegations against their parents of domestic violence and religious fanaticism. Given the differing approaches of child protection authorities in Romania and Sweden, the Romanian Senate is also requesting that Romanian experts be allowed to assess the girls’ physical and mental well-being and their wishes. Based on international data, in recent years, between 180,000 and 250,000 children are estimated to have suffered as a result of separation from their parents, with serious long-term consequences.

Agreement.  The United States has already signed a preliminary agreement to end the war in Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump announced, while Vice President J.D. Vance clarified that this was an electronic signature and that the actual signing ceremony would take place on Friday. Donald Trump noted that the agreement provides, among other things, for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, which has been under blockade for more than three months, and guarantees that Iran will not possess nuclear weapons. Following the announcement of the signing of a provisional agreement between the U.S. and Iran, fuel prices continued to fall. Within the European Union, Romania ranks 17th among the countries with the cheapest gasoline and 15th in terms of the lowest diesel prices. (MI)
