Political consultations at Cotroceni

Romania’s President, Nicuşor Dan, is expecting the leaders of parliamentary political parties at the Presidential Palace on Monday for fresh consultations regarding the designation of a prime minister candidate. The talks come after Liberal MEP Siegfried Mureșan, the third prime minister designated by the president in the past five months, failed to secure Parliament’s vote of confidence.

Dan has asked the parties to come with viable solutions and ruled out the presence of AUR, the nationalist opposition, in the structure of a new government because, as he explained, doing so would damage Romania’s relationship with its external partners. At the same time, the president gave assurances that both the country’s pro-Western orientation and its assumed financial commitments will be maintained.

Furthermore, Nicuşor Dan said that organizing snap elections is not a solution to the current political crisis and told parliamentary parties that in a democracy, one cannot govern without a genuine willingness to negotiate, compromise and build a majority.

Flu vaccination season underway

The flu vaccination season has begun in Romania, with medical professionals warning that as the weather cools and children return to school, the risk of spreading viral infections increases significantly. The influenza vaccine can be obtained from pharmacies with a medical prescription. Vulnerable individuals, such as children, pregnant women, the elderly and the chronically ill, receive the vaccine free of charge, while other patients benefit from a 50% discount.

Administration can take place either in a family doctor’s office or at an authorized center or pharmacy. Specialists advise that it is preferable to get vaccinated before the circulation of flu viruses intensifies. At the first signs of a cold, doctors advise people to stay home to prevent the outbreak of local clusters.

The fight for EU cohesion and agricultural funds

Romania and 16 other European Union Member States have requested the preservation of funds dedicated to agriculture and cohesion policy in the upcoming European budget for the 2028–2034 period. In an online post, Romanian President Nicuşor Dan said that the request was transmitted via a letter addressed to Micheál Martin, the Prime Minister of Ireland, the country currently holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The 17 signatory states belonging to the Friends of Cohesion Group support maintaining the current level of funding for cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy, alongside the allocation of additional resources for defense, security, competitiveness, energy and connectivity. Romania is advocating for a larger European budget designed to narrow development gaps between EU Member States.

Advance agricultural subsidies

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Agency for Payments and Intervention in Agriculture are preparing the disbursement of advance payments of up to 75% of subsidies granted to farmers, starting October 16. Authorities say the financial support will enable farmers to cover a major portion of the costs required for autumn field work and farm operational expenses. The line minister, Tánczos Barna, stated that field inspections have concluded in the majority of counties, with over 96% of selected areas verified nationwide.

TollRo Electronic Road Pricing Bill

The Senate in Bucharest is scheduled to debate a bill on Monday that provides for postponing until March 31, 2027, the application of fines and the €400 compensation fee for users of the new electronic road toll system, TollRo. TollRo is Romania’s new official solution for paying for the use of the national road network, expressways, and motorways. The grace period without fines will allow for application fixes and testing with real users from both Romania and abroad, according to the explanatory memorandum of the bill. The initiative comes in the context where the platform registered a very high volume of traffic on its first day of operation, October 1, which caused the system to crash. Following the vote in the Senate, the bill will go to the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making body in this case.

US AI Strategy appointment

US President Donald Trump has appointed National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton as coordinator of the Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy. Clayton will head a commission tasked with analyzing risks associated with AI, as well as government mechanisms for reporting incidents linked to AI agents. Furthermore, the commission, whose members also include Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, among others, will issue recommendations on strengthening federal authorities’ capacity to respond to challenges generated by AI. Donald Trump is a promoter of AI and opposes its strict regulation. Recently, however, heads of major tech companies have warned that artificial intelligence could threaten humanity and have proposed regulation, including in discussions with the UN Security Council. Additionally, researchers and programmers involved in AI development have warned that within a few years, AI could even destroy humankind. (VP)
