Inflation

In Romania, the annual inflation rate climbed to 9.87% in March, compared to 9.31% in February. The increase was driven by service costs rising by 11.05%, non-foods by 10.89% and foodstuffs by 7.67%, National Statistics Institute data showed Tuesday. The National Bank has revised its inflation forecast for the end of 2026 upward to 3.9% (from 3.7%) and anticipates it will reach 2.7% by the end of 2027. The Central Bank also warned that inflation will likely spike between March and June beyond previous estimates, primarily due to rising fuel costs sparked by surging oil and gas prices amid the conflict in the Middle East.

Meetings in Washington

Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare is traveling to Washington for the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings. The primary objective of the visit is to strengthen the partnership with the USA and bolster Romania’s macroeconomic standing in international markets. His agenda includes meetings with representatives from the White House, the Department of Commerce, the US Treasury, the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and US Exim Bank.

Additionally, Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete will be in Washington starting Tuesday for talks with the World Bank and major American healthcare companies, including Pfizer. According to a press briefing, the visit aims to transform the compensation Romania owes Pfizer regarding COVID-19 vaccines into a tangible benefit for patients by securing access to treatments currently unavailable in the public system.

Diplomatic invitation

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu has invited her future Hungarian counterpart, Anita Orban, to visit Romania. During a telephone call, the two discussed a new approach to Hungarian foreign policy based on mutual respect and a shared ambition to improve the quality of life for their citizens. In a post on X, Minister Țoiu hailed what she termed a “historic moment of change” in Budapest as proof that “the power of citizens who choose to demand a better future through their vote is sovereign”.

Alert

Residents in northern Tulcea County (southeast Romania, bordering Ukraine) received a new early-warning alert message on Monday night due to the ongoing war in the neighboring country. Two F-16 aircraft monitored drones flying near Romanian airspace. While the population was warned of potential falling debris, no violations of national airspace were detected.

The Defense Ministry noted that during nearly 70 attacks near the border, there have been 21 instances of Russian drones entering Romanian airspace and 41 cases where drone fragments were found on Romanian soil. Since the start of the war, over 70 early warning messages have been sent to four border counties.

Iran

The US reportedly sought a 20-year suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment program as part of a deal to end the conflict against Iran, following failed weekend talks in Islamabad. According to The Wall Street Journal, this pause would be accompanied by sanctions relief. However, The New York Times reports that Iran is only willing to suspend activities for five years.

The proposals appear to be a diluted version of Donald Trump’s public demands for a permanent end to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. US Vice President JD Vance left the talks without a result, with key sticking points remaining the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the nuclear program.

Papal Tour

Pope Leo XIV has begun a tour of Africa, starting in Algeria, a majority-Muslim nation and the birthplace of St. Augustine. Elena Postelnicu, Radio Romania’s Rome correspondent, reports that in Algeria, as well as for his upcoming stops in Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea, the Pope will emphasize the need to reject war. Themes of the tour include the role of youth, women and religion in peacebuilding, the commemoration of martyrs and the risks associated with resource exploitation.

Football

Romania’s national football team will face Wales in Bucharest for their second friendly match scheduled for June, the Romanian Football Federation announced today on its official website. The Romanian footballers are now set to meet Georgia in Tbilisi at Mikheil Meskhi Stadium on June 2, followed by the encounter with Wales on June 6 at Steaua Stadium in Bucharest.

The match against Wales will mark the 6th meeting between the two sides. Romania currently holds a positive record with three wins, one draw and one loss. Their last meeting took place in Cardiff in November 1993, a historic match that secured Romania’s qualification to the 1994 World Cup. Notably, both teams failed to qualify to the 2026 World Cup.
