GOVERNMENT – Romania has officially been dealing with a fuel crisis since April 1st, due to the war in the Middle East. Consequently, a fuel market crisis has been declared for three months, a period in which the commercial surcharges that gasoline and diesel suppliers can apply are capped, and exports are limited. The government continues to discuss the next measure to temper price increases, and Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare says he has two options.
ECONOMY – Romania’s current economic growth model, based on European funds, low labor costs and remittances from the diaspora, has reached its limits and needs to be restructured, Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu said. She said that a radical change is needed that requires solid public institutions and financial discipline at all levels. Also important is Romania’s accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, expected to be completed this year.
DEMOGRAPHY – Romania’s population reached 21.646 million on January 1, 2026, down 0.5% compared to the same period the previous year, according to data published today by the National Statistics Institute. The urban and female population account for 55.2% and 51.2% , respectively, of the total. The demographic aging process continued last year, with a slight decrease in the share of young people (0-14 years old) and an increase in the share of elderly people (65 years old and over) in the total population.
SPEECH – President Donald Trump assured Americans that the United States is close to achieving its objectives in Iran and that the military operation will end soon. According to Radio Romania’s Washington correspondent, in a speech at the White House, Trump did not repeat the threat of withdrawing his country from NATO, over not receiving the support he expected from the allies. Instead, he said again that Gulf oil-dependent countries must deal with unblocking and securing the Strait of Hormuz and urged them to buy American oil until then. 66% of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s war against Iran.
PSD – The PSD leadership, in power in Romania alongside the PNL, USR and UDMR, ended, on Wednesday, the meetings with the local branches regarding the conditions and formula for staying in power. Social-Democratic leader Sorin Grindeanu said that most party members seem to be in favor of abandoning the current coalition formula with Ilie Bolojan as prime minister and even to join the opposition. On April 20, the party is expected to announce whether or not it leaves the government. On the other hand, Prime Minister Bolojan warned that a political crisis at this time would be extremely risky for the country’s stability and would increase the state’s financing costs.
VACCINES – A Brussels court has ordered Poland and Romania to pay an outstanding balance for COVID vaccines ordered from the pharmaceutical group Pfizer/BioNTech. Poland should pay 1.3 billion euros, and Romania 600 million euros. The American company sued the two countries in the fall of 2023, to enforce the execution of these procurement contracts, which, following the end of the pandemic, Poland and Romania refused to fully cover. The European Commission negotiated and concluded these COVID vaccine purchases on behalf of EU member states, so Belgian courts have jurisdiction to resolve disputes related to these contracts.
ROBOTICS – The Delta Force robotics team of the National High School of Informatics in Arad (west) has qualified for the FIRST Championship – FIRST Robotics Competition in Houston, USA, which will take place between April 29 and May 2. The competition is intended for the elites in the field, and Arad will represent Romania in the confrontation with highly technological countries, such as the USA, China or Japan. The qualification comes as a confirmation of the team’s excellence, which in 2022 made history, becoming the first team outside the USA to win the title of World Champion at the FIRST Tech Challenge.
