Domestic political crisis

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has officially decided to withdraw its political support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, the leader of the National Liberal Party. The decision was reached during a meeting this Monday with an overwhelming majority of 97.7% of the votes. Addressing PSD members from across the country, party president Sorin Grindeanu said that the Social Democrats can no longer endorse the austerity measures imposed by the current government, stating that the party must push for change before it is too late.

In response to the vote, Prime Minister Bolojan said that he has taken note of the decision, which he characterized as completely wrong and irresponsible toward Romania. The Prime Minister emphasized that certain principles, such as reducing waste, creating a more efficient state, and governing with honesty, are non-negotiable requirements for national development. He asserted that PSD clearly does not agree with these principles. Despite the withdrawal of support, Bolojan added that he will continue to carry out his mandate as Prime Minister to ensure governing stability.

The Prime Minister had previously warned that a rupture within the coalition could jeopardize critical reforms, planned spending cuts and the absorption of Recovery and Resilience Plan funds, particularly given the already difficult domestic and international economic climate.

Presidential stance

President Nicuşor Dan has acknowledged that the political landscape is likely headed for a period of turbulence. However, he noted that there remains a consensus among the coalition parties regarding the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the maintenance of the country’s financial stability. The President expressed hope that a formula can be found to continue pro-Western governance despite the current disagreement between PSD and PNL. He announced his intention to consult with the parties as often as necessary to unblock the crisis, emphasizing his role as a mediator and urging all sides to act with calm and lucidity. Furthermore, the President stated he does not believe a motion of no confidence is imminent and clarified that he will not support any government that includes the sovereignist AUR party.

Diplomatic Report: Brussels

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Ţoiu held an official meeting in Brussels this Monday with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. The session focused on high-priority dossiers on the European agenda, specifically outlining Romania’s objectives for the upcoming multiannual budget and the necessary measures to bolster competitiveness. The two officials also discussed opportunities for business growth within an enhanced single market, alongside the current security landscape and Europe’s ongoing contributions to regional stability.

A central theme of the discussions was the Multiannual Financial Framework for the 2028-2034 period. The Romanian Foreign Minister expressed support for the European Parliament’s ambitious stance, advocating for a budget robust enough to drive the economic transformation of the continent.

This meeting followed an earlier engagement at NATO headquarters, where Minister Ţoiu inaugurated a showcase featuring twenty premier Romanian companies. These firms presented a range of defense solutions to North Atlantic Alliance member states, including anti-drone and anti-aircraft systems, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and specialized communication technologies designed for all environments, including outer space.

Cultural news: Munich and Paris

The 16th Munich Literature Festival begins this Tuesday with prominent Romanian participation. The program features writer Gabriela Adameşteanu and visual artist Dan Perjovschi, alongside several Romanian film screenings. The German translation of the acclaimed book “Voices at a Distance” will be launched this Friday at the Literaturhaus Munich, with both the author and translator Jan Koneffke in attendance. Film enthusiasts can also look forward to screenings of the documentary “Colectiv” by Alexander Nanau and the film “Aferim!” by Radu Jude. This follows Romania’s recent success at the Paris Book Festival, where authors like Mircea Cărtărescu and Matei Vişniec represented the country at the Grand Palais.

Global alert: seismic activity in Japan

Finally, Japan has issued a warning to its population regarding an increased risk of a massive earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale. This follows a violent 7.7 magnitude quake that shook the northern part of the Japanese archipelago today, triggering a tsunami warning. Government officials have urged residents in high-risk areas to seek higher ground and prepare for potential disasters, as the first seismic waves have already been reported in regional ports. (VP)
