Crisis – The Social Democratic Party (PSD) officially left the government led by the Liberal Ilie Bolojan on Thursday. After the Social Democratic ministers submitted their resignations, the prime minister appointed interim ministers to avoid a government deadlock. This solution does not require a vote of approval in Parliament for the next 45 days, a period during which the government will have full powers. The interim position for Energy was taken over by the prime minister himself, while the other portfolios—Labor, Justice, Health, Agriculture, and Transportation—were placed under the authority of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) ministers remaining in the cabinet. From Cyprus, at the informal EU summit, President Nicuşor Dan stated that he would tell European leaders that Romania remained committed to a pro-European course. He explained that state institutions are functioning and that the country will continue on the path it has chosen.

Summit – President Nicuşor Dan believes that Romania’s prosperity and security depend on a strong European Union, and one of the key topics on the agenda of the Cyprus summit is the future European budget, in an effort to align Brussels’ ambitions with an adequate level of funding. The Romanian head of state said he wanted part of the competitiveness fund to also reach companies in less developed countries, so as not to widen the gap. Gathered in Cyprus on Thursday and Friday, European Union heads of state and government are also meeting today with leaders from the Middle East to discuss the war in Iran and the situation in Lebanon.

Espionage – A high-security escort has been organized today from Bucharest to the Albiţa border crossing into the Republic of Moldova to hand over Alexandru Bălan, the former deputy director of the secret services in Chişinău, to the Moldovan authorities, on serious espionage charges. The investigators of the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) have established that between 2024 and 2025, Alexandru Bălan allegedly met in Budapest with KGB officers from Belarus, to whom he sold state secrets, acts that also endangered Romania’s national security. The operation that led to his arrest last fall was a Europe-wide effort, involving intelligence services from Romania, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

Femicide – The law on preventing and combating femicide and violence against women was signed into law on Thursday by the Romanian President Nicuşor Dan. The head of state has said in a press release that violence against women is one of the most degrading and humiliating forms of behavior, and that this type of aggression has for too long been either ignored or inadequately addressed. The law defines femicide for the first time in Romanian law, introduces aggravating circumstances in cases of control and abuse, protects the children of victims, and obligates the state to intervene. Additionally, the law eliminates the requirement for a prior complaint in rape cases, introduces data collection and analysis for prevention, and establishes that the perpetrator cannot benefit from the crime.

Washington – President Donald Trump has announced that the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been extended for another three weeks. In a post on Truth Social, the White House leader stated that the decision was made following a meeting in the Oval Office between Israeli and Lebanese officials, a meeting attended by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. On the other hand, the U.S. president has said that he will not use a nuclear weapon against Iran. Answering a question from journalists, Trump has said he does not need a nuclear weapon because the United States has achieved its military objectives through conventional means. He has added that the use of a nuclear weapon should never be permitted for anyone. The U.S. president has also said he is not under time pressure and that he is waiting to reach the best possible agreement with Iran. The American media has reported that Trump is increasingly irritated by the prolongation of the conflict in the Gulf, which contradicts his campaign promises not to involve the United States in endless wars.
