FINAL4 Lots drawn in Vienna on Monday have pitted the Romanian women’s handball side, CSM Bucharest, against the French challenger, Metz Handball, in the semis of the Final 4 tournament of the Champions League. CSM Bucharest, winner of the trophy in 2016 has qualified for the Final4 in Budapest after an absence of eight years after outperforming the Danish side Team Esbjerg. In the other semifinals of the aforementioned competition, the French side, Brest Bretagne, which eliminated the other Romanian side in the competition, Gloria Bistrita, will be up against trophy holder, Gyori Audi ETO. Final4 will be hosted by Budapest over June 6th and 7th.

PNRR In a web post on Monday, Romania’s Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, identifies the most important projects and reforms that must be completed within the National Plan of Recovery and Resilience, also known as PNRR. Out of scores of milestones to be met by the end of August, nine have been singled out as the most important since 7 billion Euros worth of funds are depending on them. This money is needed for the completion of investment in Romania’s road and rail infrastructure, the construction of schools and hospitals or the refurbishment of various public buildings. Nine laws regulating various domains are to be amended in order to meet the aforementioned milestones, ranging from salaries in the public sector, to fiscal or energy aspects and voting on these projects is going to be beyond disputes and different approaches, a responsibility test for Romania’s political class, the Head of the Romanian government has said.

TALKS The Social Democratic Party (PSD), which last week withdrew its support for the Liberal Prime Minister and pulled its ministers out of the cabinet, announced on Monday that, together with the populist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), it is filing a motion of no confidence against the Bolojan administration. The announcement was made during the new consultations between the head of state and the leaders of pro-European parties, including the PSD. The topics of discussion announced by the Presidential Administration concerned the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the SAFE program, on which the PSD, the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) showed their readiness to cooperate despite political disagreements. We recall that the Social Democrats accused Ilie Bolojan of destroying the economy and reducing the population’s purchasing power and called for his resignation, expressing their willingness to continue governing in a coalition with the PNL, USR, and UDMR, but with a different prime minister. Ilie Bolojan announced, however, that he would continue to serve as prime minister to ensure the stability of the government and noted that the decisions made so far, aimed at reducing the very large budget deficit, had been endorsed by all parties in the coalition, including the PSD. Following the resignations of the PSD ministers, Ilie Bolojan opted for interim ministers to avoid a deadlock in the country’s administration, according to his statements. This is a solution that does not require a vote of approval in parliament and allows the executive to retain full powers for 45 days, just as it has until now.

VISIT As of Monday, King Charles of the United Kingdom begins is paying a formal state visit to the United States after it was determined that there is no danger following the recent shooting at the White House during the Correspondents’ Dinner, which President Donald Trump attended. Buckingham Palace announced the visit following a series of discussions with U.S. officials. According to Reuters, King Charles’s four-day trip aims to strengthen the relationship between the US and the UK, amid several differences, particularly regarding the war in the Middle East.
