Motion of no confidence

The motion of no confidence initiated by PSD and AUR against the government led by Liberal Ilie Bolojan, filed on Tuesday, is being read today in Parliament. The document contains 253 signatures, including those from the “PACE” group and unaffiliated MPs. The text focuses on harsh criticism of the economic and administrative policies proposed by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The motion will be debated and voted on Tuesday, May 5, in a plenary session of Parliament. To be adopted, it requires the vote of 233 MPs.

3SI Business Forum

The president of Romania, Nicușor Dan, is currently in Croatia, attending a special session of the 3SI Business Forum, held on the sidelines of the Three Seas Initiative (3SI) Summit. According to the Presidency, the head of state will be part of the Leaders’ Panel alongside representatives from the regional financial and business sectors, as well as from the USA, Japan, South Korea and Canada. International financial institutions are also present.

The event is presented as a major platform for mobilizing investment, particularly in the energy sector. The Presidency notes that the high participation of Romanian companies demonstrates private sector interest in regional projects.

3SI is a flexible and informal political platform at the presidential level, bringing together 12 EU member states located between the Adriatic, Baltic and Black Seas. The initiative seeks to increase convergence and cohesion while reducing economic development gaps between different areas and EU member states by increasing interconnectivity in the region within the fields of energy, transport and digital infrastructure.

Drone attacks

New drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine took place Wednesday morning in the town of Izmail, near the river border with Romania in Tulcea County. Local residents got early warning alerts on their phones.

According to the Defense Ministry, two F-16 aircraft from the Air Policing combat service were scrambled during the night at a southern base. Ground radars tracked two groups, consisting of seven and eight drones respectively, which struck the town of Izmail in Ukraine. The aircraft pilots reported multiple explosions on the Ukrainian side of the Danube in the Izmail area. No radar signals were detected within national airspace. Recently, a Russian drone damaged a household and an electricity pole in the town of Galați (southeast).

King Charles in the USA

King Charles delivered a speech before a joint session of the US Congress, marking only the second time a British monarch has done so. He referenced the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, condemning the violence and stating that such acts “will never succeed”, CNN reports. The British monarch praised NATO’s role in protecting citizens and shared interests and emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. He described the relationship between the United States and Great Britain as a “remarkable partnership, renewed and founded on reconciliation”, expressing hope that it will continue based on shared values.

The speech represented a major diplomatic moment for the British monarch, meeting with a warm and bipartisan reception, CNN notes. According to the American television network, at several points, Charles subtly, but firmly, contradicted certain issues where president Donald Trump has clashed with Great Britain in recent months.

The new 2028-2034 EU financial framework

The European Parliament has established its position for negotiations with Member States regarding the structure and main figures of the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework. MEPs are proposing a predictable, adequate and transparent budget, focusing on key areas including agriculture, European security and energy independence. Additional budget allocations are provided for research and innovation to ensure Europe does not become dependent on technologies developed in third countries in the future.

The budget is 10% higher than the version proposed by the European Commission, but it also stipulates revenue sources from digital taxes on online gambling and cryptocurrency transactions.

In the post-2027 budget, the fields of defense and competitiveness are marked as new priorities. (VP)
