EDUCATION — Education Minister Ligia Deca said Friday that safety in the education units is the main priority of the ministry she is heading, adding that consultations have been initiated to find solutions to prevent incidents such as the ones that have taken place in schools recently. Deca’s reaction comes after a video was made public showing students aged 13 harassing a teacher during class, at a middle school in Prahova, in the south-east. The Prahova School Inspectorate has started its own investigation into the incident, in parallel with the one conducted by the Police. We remind you that on Wednesday a teacher at a high school in Bucharest was injured with a knife by a student in the classroom.
MEETING – Foreign minister Bogdan Aurescu has today met with his French counterpart, Catherine Colonna during a stopover in Romania of the plane taking French President Emmanuel Macron back from China. Aurescu announced on a social media channel that he pleaded, during the meeting, for the lift to brigade level of the NATO tactical group deployed to Romania under French command. “We have talked about the results of the visit to China, regional security and the need to consolidate the eastern flank of NATO in the Black Sea region,” Aurescu said in his message. Moreover, he hailed France’s active support for Romania’s Schengen accession.
FARMERS — PM Nicolae Ciuca on Friday called on agriculture minister Petre Daea to take urgent measures to support Romanian farmers. Daea met with representatives of the farmers who protested Friday in Bucharest and promised that those affected by the imports of cheap grain from Ukraine will receive compensations as soon as possible. He also said that the money from Brussels is only a first trench. He reminded of the letter sent to the European Commission, signed by Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Bulgaria, in which additional compensations are requested for farmers affected by the war in Ukraine. We remind you that farmers from 18 Romanian counties took to the streets on Friday, unhappy with the level of compensations proposed by the European Commission for the damage incurred by the tax-free import of cheap cereals from Ukraine.
BOOK FAIR — The Gaudeamus Radio Romania Book Fair continues in Cluj-Napoca, north-west. Today most events will be focusing on books for children. Arco Iris Publishers are presenting their collection for children, while Scoala Ardeleana Publishers is inviting the public to a meeting with the President of the Romanian Academy, academician Ioan-Aurel Pop. The book “Iuliu Maniu — the Sphinx from Badacin” written by Marin Pop will be launched by Scoala Ardeleana Publishers, which also releases the book “Iuliu Maniu seen by Romanians in the US”. The day will end with a poetry recital. The fair opened on April 5th and will end on April 9th. .
ROMA DAY — We have the responsibility to build a society in which all citizens are accepted and have equal opportunities irrespective of ethnicity or the environment they come from, said President Klaus Iohannis in his message on the International Roma Day and of the “Celebration of the Roma Ethnicity in Romania”. Iohannis reiterated, on behalf of the Romanian state, the commitment to combat intolerance, discrimination, racism and xenophobia. (EE)
