Hungary, Romania, and Poland had the highest economic growth in the EU in the second quarter of 2019; Romania started celebrating today Navy Day, held on August 15 each year

ECONOMIC – Hungary, Romania, and Poland had the highest economic growth in the EU in the second quarter of 2019, as compared to last year, according to preliminary data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). All EU countries have reported growth between April and June, with the exception of Italy, whose economy was stagnant. Hungary reported 5.1% growth, Romania reported 4.6%, and Poland reported 4.1% growth. According to the National Institute of Statistics, Romanias economy grew by 4.4% in the second quarter as against last year. A growth of 4.7% in the first half of the year, as compared to last year, was reported by the National Institute of Statistics.The Romanian authorities expect a 5.5% growth of the economy this year. At the same time, the European Commission revised its estimate of growth for the country up, going to 4%, considering that in May it expected the GDP to grow by 3.3%.



NAVY — August 15 is Romanian Navy Day. Ceremonies started on Wednesday on the Black Sea shore at the Sailor Cross monument in Constanta, at the Navy Heroes Monument in Mangalia, and at the Cemetery of Heroes in Tulcea. Military seamen gathered to celebrate the bravery of sailors who fought on the Danube and on the Black Sea in the War of Independence and the two world wars. A wide array of events are scheduled for Thursday in the cities of Constanta, Mangalia, Tulcea, Braila, and Galati, as well as in the capital Bucharest. The ceremonies are centered on the training ship Mircea, which will receive a decoration from President Klaus Iohannis, in honor of its 80th year in active navy service. Also attending will be units of the Ukrainian, Italian, and American armed forces, which take part in the exercise at sea and the festivities held on shore by Fleet Command.



FOOTBALL – Romanias football champions, CFR Cluj, managed a spectacular qualification to the play-offs of the League of Champions, after defeating Scottish side Celtic 4-3 in Glasgow Tuesday night, in the second round of the third preliminaries. One week ago, the two teams tied their first game. CFR is slated to play at home on August 20 in the play-offs against Slavia Prague, the Czech Republic champions. Two more Romanian teams play on Thursday, away from home in the second leg of the Europa League third preliminaries. FCSB vice-champions play against Czech team Mlada Boleslav, after a blank tie, and Universitatea Craiova play against AEK Athens, after a 2-0 defeat.



TENNIS — Romanian tennis start Simona Halep, currently ranking fourth in the world, plays today in the second round of the WTA tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the US, with 3 million dollars in prize money at stake. She takes on Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, 43rd seeded, in their first game ever. Halep played in the finals last year, and was eliminated by Dutch player Kiki Bertens.



MILITARY — The Romanian Defense Ministry holds on Monday at Mihail Kogalniceanu 57 Airbase a military ceremony for the departure to Mali of the Carpathian Pumas Detachment. According to a press release of the ministry issued on Wednesday, the Romanian soldiers will take part in the United Nations integrated multidimensional stabilization mission. The 120 enlisted men will be backed by four IAR-330 Puma helicopters. Their mission starts in mid-October. They will be running medevac, troop and materiel transport, air patrol, and surveillance missions.
