USR The USR’s Political Committee —a party currently sharing power in Romania—is meeting today to reconfirm Dominic Fritz, the incumbent mayor of Timișoara (western Romania), as party president. The meeting takes place against the backdrop of a recent Constitutional Court ruling and political attacks launched by the PSD against both Dominic Fritz and USR, the party says. USR believes that the Constitutional Court’s recent decision regarding the law on the integrity of public officials sets a dangerous precedent for the rule of law by validating a statute that paves the way for imposing a new sanction for actions that occurred before that sanction existed. The Constitutional Court ruled as constitutional a provision mandating the automatic termination of office within 30 days for local elected officials who had been definitively declared incompatible or in a conflict of interest prior to the new law’s entry into force. This article—introduced by the Social Democratic opposition and the populist, ultra-nationalist opposition—had been challenged at the Court by the Presidency, as well as by the PNL and USR, on the grounds that it violated the principle of non-retroactivity. Three civic organizations from Timișoara—the city where the 1989 anti-communist revolution began—said that when the law is altered to eliminate political opponents, when rules can be rewritten retroactively, and when state institutions are weaponized against inconvenient figures, the situation transcends a mere legal dispute; instead, it represents the use of state institutions as instruments of political repression.

FLOW The Danube’s flow rate at the point of entry into Romania will remain at 1,300 cubic meters per second over the next three days, rising to 1,350 cubic meters by August 25—levels well below the multi-year average for August (almost 4 thousand cubic meters per second)— says a forecast published by the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management. Danube flow rates, which have dropped to historic lows, led to the shutdown of the two reactors at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant (southeast), which account for approximately 20% of the country’s energy production. The Ministry of Energy has repeatedly said the National Power System has sufficient resources to cover the production shortfall resulting from the shutdown of Cernavodă Unit 2, including wind power, the coal-fired Rovinari 4 power unit, and hydroelectric generation. Furthermore, the National Power System possesses significant cross-border interconnection capacity—approximately 4,000 MW—enabling electricity imports.

SPORTS Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea takes on Jessica Pegula of the USA, today in the Round of 16 of the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati (Ohio, USA), a competition with more than 7 million dollars in prize money. Sorana had previously defeated Anna Kalinskaya of Russia. In football, Romanian champions Universitatea Craiova will be up at home on Thursday against Ararat-Armenia Yerevan in the first leg of the Europa League play-off round. Universitatea has already secured a place in the group stage of European competitions.

WEATHER The weather is generally fair and warming up slightly, except in parts of southern and eastern Romania, where temperatures are dropping. Light showers and thunderstorms are expected locally in the mountains and in isolated areas of the northwest, center, and east. Highs will be ranging between 23 and 34 degrees Celsius, reaching 31 degrees in Bucharest. The National Meteorological Administration has issued heatwave and thermal discomfort warnings, effective from Thursday across most of the country. An Orange Code alert applies to the west and southwest, where peak temperatures will be exceptionally high, ranging between 35 and 39 degrees. Heatwave conditions and pronounced thermal discomfort are expected, with the temperature-humidity index (THI) exceeding the critical threshold of 80 units. Tropical nights—with lows of 20 to 26 degrees—will occur in some areas. A Yellow Code warning has been issued for the rest of the country—excluding two southeastern counties—covering the same period.

MEETING The Bucharest government is meeting today in a hybrid format for a special session to approve the medium-term railway infrastructure development strategy. According to government sources, the document outlines priorities for the next five years. The focus will be on the accelerated rehabilitation of railway infrastructure, as well as on increasing passenger numbers and freight volumes transported by rail.

RATE The annual inflation rate in the European Union rose to 3% in July, up from 2.9% in June, with Romania once again boasting the highest figure—an annual price increase of 8.2%—according to data published on Wednesday by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office. Last month, the EU member states with the lowest annual inflation rates were Sweden (0.3%), the Czech Republic (1.3%), Denmark and Hungary (both at 1.6%). At the other end of the spectrum was Romania (8.2%), followed at some distance by Lithuania (5.4%), Cyprus and Bulgaria (both at 4.4%). Regarding Romania, data previously released by the National Institute of Statistics showed the annual inflation rate dropping to 8.16% in July from 10.42% in June. Meanwhile, the National Bank of Romania has raised its inflation forecast for the end of 2026 to 5.5% and projects the rate will reach 2.9% by the end of 2027.
