DIPLOMACY – President Nicușor Dan delivered his first major foreign policy speech since taking office today, on the sidelines of the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy, bringing together heads of diplomatic missions, consular offices and directors of Romanian cultural institutes accredited abroad. The president said that, at domestic level, the state requires a reform, following which the economy must be restarted. At international level, we have been experiencing multiple crises for several years, president Dan added, who stressed that Romania’s foreign policy must remain predictable and coherent. There are three directions in which diplomatic activity must be emphasized: security, the economy and Romanians abroad, the head of state said. On the security side, Romania will continue to be NATO’s ally, will continue to be interested in the Black Sea, must invest in defense. In this regard, the EU SAFE instrument, to which proposals have already been submitted, is one way to do it, Nicuşor Dan explained. The president also referred to the continuation of support for Ukraine, the collaboration with partners in this regard, but also the fact that the Republic of Moldova must remain a priority. Also, the Strategic Partnership with the USA must be consolidated, especially in the security and economic areas. With regard to the economic dimension, the president recalled EU membership, the negotiations for the future multiannual financial framework, which must take place in parallel with an internal reflection process on Romania’s development directions starting 2028, but also on the country’s OECD accession, a strategic objective with a deadline for the the end of 2026. A strategy regarding Romania’s priorities is needed, Nicuşor Dan pointed out, and this requires an internal effort, but also from diplomats. Due to its geographical position, Romania must and can become a connectivity hub for Europe, Asia and Africa. As for the Romanians living abroad, an exhaustive study is needed regarding their needs, in order to create a strategy with specific objectives, budgets and deadlines.

MEETING – The Romanian Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests, Diana Buzoianu, met in Bucharest on Monday with her Moldovan counterpart, Sergiu Lazarencu. The two officials discussed the exchange of best practices and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the field of environment protection. One of the main topics addressed was the Deposit-Return System already implemented in Romania. It involves returning empty beverage packaging – plastic, glass or aluminum cans – directly in stores, where consumers are returned the deposit paid upon purchase. In the first six months of 2025, Romania reached a collection rate of 79%, a result considered remarkable, which prevents the accumulation of millions of tons of plastic on land and in landfills. The Republic of Moldova is to implement this system starting 2027, benefiting from Romania’s experience and expertise to adapt the mechanism to local specificity. The two ministers also addressed the National Forest Inventory – a scientific instrument by means of which Romania periodically monitors forests, the volume of wood, forested areas and the level of stored carbon. The ministers agreed that Romanian specialists would provide support to the Republic of Moldova in compiling the first national forest inventory, considered essential for responsible environmental policies and for protecting forests.

GAZA – The Israeli security cabinet will meet this evening in Jerusalem, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced. Local media reports the meeting will address a possible return to negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza. In early August, the security cabinet approved a plan to take control of Gaza City and secure control over the entire Palestinian territory, with the declared objective of eliminating Hamas and freeing the hostages. In recent days, the Israeli army has strengthened its control around Gaza City, in view of the announced assault. Benjamin Netanyahu, however, ordered the opening of negotiations on Thursday for the release of “all” hostages in the Gaza Strip, in response to a new ceasefire proposal from mediators, accepted by Hamas. The current war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the unprecedented terrorist attack carried out by commandos of the Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad in southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The attack killed 1,219 people, mostly civilians. Another 251 were taken hostage and taken to the Palestinian enclave. Of these, 49 are still in the Gaza Strip, but the Israeli army has obtained information that only 22 are still alive.

ENESCU FESTIVAL – The National Chamber Orchestra of the Republic of Moldova and the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra are today performing in Bucharest, while the Orchestra and Choir of the “Transilvania” State Philharmonic will perform in Cluj-Napoca, as part of this year’s “George Enescu” Festival. The 27th edition takes place in Bucharest and throughout the country until September 21. This year, the event is themed “Celebrations” – in the context of marking 70 years since the death of the great Romanian composer. During the 29 days of the festival, almost 100 concerts and performances are scheduled. In addition to Enescu’ masterpieces – such as the opera “Oedipus”, the Symphonies, the Romanian Rhapsodies or the “Ballad for Violin and Orchestra” – the audience will also enjoy works by composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Pierre Boulez and Maurice Ravel. Over 80 ensembles, symphony orchestras, choirs and chamber groups from 28 countries will take part.

US OPEN – Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse lost to Russian-born Australian player Daria Kasatkina 7-5, 6-1, in the first round of the US Open. Today, another two Romanians are competing in the women’s singles, Jaqueline Cristian and Sorana Cîrstea. Cristian will take on Danielle Collins of the USA, while Cârstea will play Solana Sierra of Argentina. We recall Sorana Cîrstea last week won the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland. (VP)
