Emergency power plan targets industrial heavyweights

Romania’s interim cabinet meets today in an emergency session to establish mandatory peak-hour power restrictions for major industrial energy consumers. Affected industrial giants will receive 24-hour advance notice, with mandatory cuts taking effect only if voluntary reductions fail to meet national power demand.

The measures are part of an emergency risk-management framework introduced as prolonged drought conditions severely strain the country’s power grid. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan assured the public that critical continuous-operation infrastructure, including hospitals and residential areas, will remain fully connected to the national grid.

In yesterday’s session, alongside drought mitigation measures, the cabinet adopted several decrees addressing crisis readiness for regional conflict, public health emergencies and earthquake risks.

Unions push back against proposed public pay reforms

Major healthcare unions have submitted counterproposals for Romania’s upcoming public sector pay legislation, demanding firm guarantees against income cuts, immediate wage increases for the majority of healthcare workers upon enactment, and clearly identified funding sources. Union leadership is also calling on the Ministry of Labor and Parliament to publicly commit to the proposed pay structure.

Education unions simultaneously reaffirmed their key demands, which include reversing proposed bonus cuts, preserving merit allowances and honoring wage grids promised in prior negotiations.

Reforming the public pay system is a key milestone under Romania’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) agreed with the EU, but the government’s draft proposal has already sparked public protests.

PM confident ahead of Moody’s sovereign rating release

Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan struck an optimistic tone regarding Romania’s credit standing, anticipating a stable outlook based on the country’s adherence to fiscal discipline and deficit targets. Bolojan emphasized that sustained political stability is essential to press ahead with structural reforms, curb public debt, and combat tax evasion, key factors for maintaining investor confidence and lowering borrowing costs.

The statement comes ahead of Moody’s scheduled release of its Romania sovereign assessment today, with Standard & Poor’s set to follow on October 2. Last week, Fitch reconfirmed Romania’s credit rating at “BBB-” with a negative outlook.

Romania to streamline voter registration for resident EU citizens

European Union citizens residing in Romania will soon benefit from a simplified, paperless registration process for local and European Parliament elections. The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) has launched a public draft bill proposing the complete digitization of special electoral roll registration.

Under the proposed legislation, resident EU citizens will no longer need to apply in person at local municipal offices. Instead, applications and required documentation can be submitted online via the official AEP portal, with processing guaranteed within 10 days. Additionally, all electoral information will be translated into a widely spoken international language and formatted to meet accessibility standards for voters with disabilities.

AEP President Adrian Țuțuianu emphasized that the initiative eliminates administrative burdens while aligning Romania’s voting procedures with broader EU standards.

Untold kicks off with massive opening night

The 11th edition of Untold, one of the world’s largest music festivals, kicked off last night in Cluj-Napoca. Over 100,000 festivalgoers packed the grounds for opening night, headlined by British musician Sting following an address by an Indian spiritual leader. Turnout at the main venue, Cluj Arena, was so high that organizers temporarily closed stadium gates to maintain crowd safety.

The four-day, four-night event features eight stages hosting roughly 200 international and domestic artists. The main stage, spanning 127 meters wide and 38 meters high, is the largest in the festival’s history. Upcoming headliners include Zara Larsson, Lewis Capaldi, Flo Rida, and Martin Garrix. Untold will conclude early Monday morning with a set by Padre Guilherme, the Portuguese Catholic priest renowned for integrating sacred chants into electronic sets.

Mixed results for Romanian clubs in European Qualifiers

Romanian football champions Universitatea Craiova secured a 1-1 draw away against Finnish side KuPS Kuopio on Thursday evening in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round. The return leg will take place in Craiova on August 13.

By contrast, CFR Cluj faces near-certain elimination from European competition following a crushing 5-0 home defeat to Norwegian side Tromsø IL in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round. (VP)
