UKRAINE – The reconstruction of Ukraine is a continental project whose success will influence the economic and security landscape of Europe, Romanian Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said on Thursday at the conference “Rebuilding Ukraine: Security, Opportunities, Investment”. In his opinion, Romania has become one of the essential logistics corridors for exports to Ukraine, adjusted tax and customs procedures to support regional stability, and worked closely with private actors involved in cross-border initiatives. In a video message broadcast during the conference, Alexandru Nazare said that Romania supports a framework that expands access to guarantees and strengthens cooperation with international financial institutions, creating the necessary confidence for medium and long-term projects in sectors essential for Ukraine’s recovery, such as infrastructure, energy, logistics and technology. “Ukraine and its reconstruction cannot be separated from the European trajectory. Alignment with European Union standards in governance, procurement, digitalization and financial regulations will significantly strengthen investor confidence. Romania will continue to support Ukraine,” the Minister of Finance also said.
JUDICIARY – “Accusations such as ‘the defendants are being whitewashed‘ are not true,” said the head of the Bucharest Court of Appeal, Liana Arsenie, on Thursday, during the institution’s first extraordinary press conference, held following findings in a journalistic investigation by Recorder, dubbed “Justice Captured.” The Recorder investigation features several prosecutors and judges, some with protected identities, who reveal how the leadership of the Bucharest Court of Appeal allegedly changed judges from panels so as to obtain favorable decisions for individuals accused of corruption. The accusations of the two judges in the Recorder investigation have no connection to reality, says Liana Arsenie. In her opinion, the investigation is “a media lynching, a demonization through manipulation, lies told by people who react due to personal failure.” She accuses “a concerted attack on the judiciary” and says she has “evidence that combats the accusations.” A judge from the Bucharest Court of Appeal, however, spoked at the press conference and said that everything that one of her colleagues revealed in the Recorder investigation was true. Judge Raluca Moroşanu also said that they are being terrorized and do not receive any help from the court leadership, in their work. The journalistic investigation is seen by the Judges’ Section of the Supreme Court of Justice as part of a plan meant to “destabilize the judiciary by destroying trust in the justice system and trust in the people in leadership positions.” The documentary brought hundreds of protesters in front of the headquarters of the Superior Council of Magistracy in Bucharest on Wednesday evening. They demanded the resignation of the Minister of Interior, Cătălin Predoiu, a former Minister of Justice, of the head of the Supreme Court, Lia Savonea, and of the leadership of the Supreme Court. The Minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu, said that any political interference in the act of justice was absolutely unacceptable and that the institution he leads is open to any reform within its competence.
MINISTER – The head of the four-party government in Bucharest, the liberal Ilie Bolojan, has said that he agreed with the president of the USR, Dominic Fritz, that, by the end of next week, his party will come up with a proposal for the Defense portfolio. In a televised interview, the prime minister said that the person to be proposed must be someone with a professional background that shows qualification, so that the field can be managed as well as possible. The previous minister, Ionuţ Moşteanu, resigned from his position two weeks ago, after the press found that he had falsified his CV, in which he listed a university degree that he did not have. The acting Minister of Defense is the Minister of Economy, Radu Miruţă, also from the USR.
ECOFIN – The head of Romanian diplomacy, Oana Ţoiu, emphasised on Thursday, at the conference “Rebuilding Ukraine: Security, Opportunities, Investment”, the vital importance of a just and lasting peace, in accordance with international law. She welcomed the diplomatic efforts of the US, as well as the substantial involvement of the European states and Ukraine. She said that any process aimed at reaching peace must include offering solid and credible security guarantees to Kyiv. The Romanian official reiterated the importance of the process of integrating Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova into the EU and underlined Romania’s firm support in this respect. In turn, the Romanian Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, stated that the reconstruction of Ukraine is a continental project whose success will influence Europe’s economic and security landscape. In his opinion, Romania has become one of the essential logistics corridors for exports to Ukraine, adjusted fiscal and customs procedures to support regional stability, and worked closely with private actors involved in cross-border initiatives. In a video message broadcast during the conference, Alexandru Nazare said that Romania supports a framework that expands access to guarantees and strengthens cooperation with international financial institutions.
