Romania–Austria bilateral relations

Austria supports Romania’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker declared on Thursday in Vienna, during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. “Romania is a partner we can rely on, given our long‑standing historical, political and economic ties. We are also connected through the large Romanian community in Austria, which makes an important contribution to Austria’s economy and social life,” Stocker said.

He highlighted that Austria is Romania’s second‑largest investor, while Romanian companies are also investing in Austria. Concerning the war in Ukraine, Stocker stated that Romania and Austria want peace based on the rights of nations, with the European Union and Ukraine at the negotiating table. “A lasting peace cannot be conceived without Ukraine and EU countries agreeing to the proposed solutions”, Ilie Bolojan added.

With regard to migration, the Austrian chancellor thanked the Romanian Prime Minister for Romania’s contribution to border protection and the fight against illegal migration. “As an EU border country, Romania has the primary responsibility not to allow illegal crossings, which it has fulfilled all these years”, Bolojan said. He added that in recent years, the number of illegal migrants entering the Union through the south‑east has dropped significantly. The two officials also discussed energy, economic cooperation, investments, Black Sea security and EU enlargement.

Negotiations for peace in Ukraine

Russia will gain control of Donbas and Novorossiya either by force or through the withdrawal of the Ukrainian army, Russian president Vladimir Putin declared. His statement came after talks in Moscow with White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and US president’s son‑in‑law Jared Kushner, regarding the American‑proposed peace plan. Putin described the meeting as “useful,” but his demands suggest he is unwilling to make any concessions.

The so‑called Novorossiya covers all of southern Ukraine, up to the border with Romania and Moldova, and was first claimed by Putin in 2014, shortly after the invasion of Crimea. He referred to Novorossiya again in a 2022 essay denying the existence of a Ukrainian nation, and three days before the full‑scale invasion of Ukraine. In recent years, however, Russia’s territorial claims have been limited to Crimea and four illegally annexed Ukrainian regions, two in Donbas and two in the south. The Kremlin also wants Ukraine to reduce its army and abandon its aspirations to join NATO, demands deemed unacceptable by Kyiv and its European allies.

Military procurement

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense announced that a contract has been signed for the purchase of a light corvette from the HISAR class, supplied by the government of Turkey. The total acquisition price is €223 million before VAT and covers not only the cost of the vessel but also personnel training and a logistical support package.

The ship is part of the Romanian Naval Forces’ armament program, aimed at increasing the effectiveness of missions to protect critical maritime infrastructure, conduct patrols, and carry out combat operations. The procurement was approved by the Supreme Council of National Defense in March.

Recognition for Victor Rebengiuc

Actor Victor Rebengiuc received on Thursday the “European Romania 2025” award from the Association for the Initiative for Democratic European Culture. President Nicușor Dan attended the ceremony, praising the actor’s dedication and the fact that “he was never carried away by success and continued to work”. The head of state also highlighted the artist’s social involvement. (VP)
