FIRE – An 18-year-old Romanian man has been reported missing after a New Year’s Eve tragedy in a crowded bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana. The fire and explosion left dozens dead and more than 100 injured. Several nationalities, including Italian and French, are among the dead or missing. The victims were taken to hospitals across Switzerland and abroad as local medical facilities were overwhelmed by the number of patients with serious burns. Initial investigations suggest the fire started when cake candles attached to champagne bottles were lifted too close to the ceiling, the local prosecutor said Friday. Condolences were sent from all corners of Europe and the world, including from Bucharest, from President Nicuşor Dan and the Romanian Orthodox Church. At the same time, Romania is part of the humanitarian contact group established to support the Swiss authorities in managing the cases of hospitalized people. The Minister of Defense in Bucharest, Radu Miruţă, said that, following the request made by Switzerland through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, the National Committee for Emergencies decided to contribute air medical transport capacity in support of the Swiss authorities.

DRONES – Romania’s General Inspectorate for Emergencies has sent a warning message to the population, after the Air Force General Staff detected the existence of targets moving towards the border area between Romania and Ukraine. In the alert message, authorities urged the population to take shelter and mentioned that the signal transmitted is preventive and concerns the possibility of objects falling from the airspace. Friday’s RO-Alert message is the second received by people in the Romanian-Ukrainian border area, after the one on the first day of the New Year.

ECONOMY – Public investments will be the main engine of growth this year, through the continuation of projects from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), the acceleration of projects from the 2021-2027 Cohesion Policy and consistent investments in infrastructure, energy, health, education and local development, and 2026 will be the year of European funds for Romania, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare wrote in a Facebook post. “Fiscal-budgetary stabilization will also be one of the key elements of the year. 2026 will bring more predictability and clarity for entrepreneurs and the business environment,” the minister says, adding that Romania ended 2025 with solid results. Alexandru Nazare also says that 2026 is a year in which Romania is decisively approaching the OECD – “a new strategic anchor of international stability and credibility,” which will trigger lower financing costs and stable investments. The minister also said that improving Romania’s image on foreign markets, digitization and administrative efficiency will also strengthen the trust of both investors and Romanians in the state – all with beneficial effects for the economy and society.

EXHIBITION – Until January 4, 2026, Moldova’s National Museum of History in Chisinau hosts the ROYAL exhibition, a cultural project dedicated to Queen Marie of Romania. The exhibition brings together 150 handmade works by 15 Romanian artists, including traditional costumes, jewellery, paintings and engravings, decorations and floral arrangements. The exhibition is organized by the Handmade Art Academy of Bucharest, an institution recognized for promoting Romanian culture through original and valuable projects.

DAKAR – Romania will be represented in the motorcycle section by Emanuel Gyenes at the 2026 Dakar Rally, which will take place between January 3 and 17, in Saudi Arabia. For Gyenes, this will be the 16th participation in the traditional desert race, which began in Africa, continued in South America and now, for the seventh consecutive time, back to the dunes of Saudi Arabia. In the car race, the Romanian brand Dacia Sandriders will count on the Brazilian Lucas Moraes, the French Sebastien Loeb and the Qatari Nasser Al-Attyah. This 48th edition of the Dakar Rally includes 4,748 timed km for motorbikes and 4,840 for cars, covered along a circuit starting and finishing in Yanbu, almost 8,000 km long, with the aim of always maintaining the same level of difficulty throughout the route.

SECURITY – Ukraine is preparing to host a new round of high-level security talks with Western partners on Saturday. National security advisers from the “Coalition of the Willing,” led by the United Kingdom and France, have agreed to meet in Kyiv on January 3, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskky, with American advisers to participate virtually. The talks will be followed by a meeting of the chiefs of staff, and a leaders’ meeting is scheduled for January 6 in France.

TENNIS – Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse (88 WTA) defeated Australian Alana Subasic (537 WTA), 6-1, 6-0, in the first round of the qualifications for the main draw of the WTA 500 tournament in Brisbane. Gabriela Ruse, who managed 7 aces in this match, secured a check of 9,955 dollars and 13 WTA points, and in the final round of the qualifications she will face Turkish Zeynep Sonmez (112 WTA).
