STORMS Severe storms struck the Bucharest area and several counties in Romania in the past couple of days. The damage is considerable, and in a town near the capital, a person inside a car that was struck by a falling tree died. Due to heavy rainfall and massive water infiltration, one of Bucharest’s metro stations was flooded and temporarily closed. In fact, several public transportation lines in the capital experienced disruptions or route changes. Aggregated data show that Bucharest firefighters responded to approximately 1,500 calls overnight, with rescue crews working to remove dozens of fallen trees, some of which had landed on cars, and to pump water out of basements and off the streets. According to a statement from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), besides Bucharest, the severe storms affected 60 localities in 20 counties.
WEATHER The weather in Romania will continue to be unstable in almost all regions with heavy downpours, thunderstorms and gale-force winds. Extremely hot temperatures and thermal discomfort are expected in the country’s northern regions with a Temperature Humidity Index above 80. In the rest of the territory, daytime temperatures are expected to be close to the normal of this period between 25 and 34 Celsius while the lows will be between 12 and 22 degrees. Amber and orange alerts for atmospheric instability, heavy downpours and even hail have been issued for most of the territory with the exception of several counties in the country’s north-east.
TARGET Radar systems belonging to Romania’s Defence Ministry on Wednesday detected an air target almost 30 kilometers of the town of Valcove in the neighboring Ukraine. According to a communiqué issued by the Defence Ministry, RO-Alert messages were issued for the north of Tulcea county, eastern Romania. Two RAF Eurofighter jets from the service of air policing were scrambled jointly with a Puma 330 helicopter of the Romanian Air Forces to monitor the situation. Neither unauthorized airspace violations, nor fallen objects on the Romanian soil have been reported.
RECESS Romanian MPs are on recess starting Wednesday, but they still have unfinished business. The main issue is the formation of a government with full powers, amid a lack of consensus among the parties. On Tuesday, President Nicuşor Dan once again called on the parties represented in Parliament to act responsibly and stated that early elections are not a solution, as they would fundamentally alter parliamentary majorities and project an image of instability. The political crisis could be resolved during an extraordinary session of Parliament, possibly toward the end of July. On the other hand, the bill approving the government ordinance on the SAFE European armament program did not receive the necessary number of votes on Tuesday to be adopted by the Chamber of Deputies, so debate on the bill will resume during the next legislative session. Instead, MPs adopted a significant package of laws essential for the milestones in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
TENNIS The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea has qualified for the second round of the Wimbledon grass-court tournament, the third Grand Slam of the year, on Tuesday after defeating Czech player Sara Bejlek 6-1, 7-6. In her next match, she will face Australian Kimberly Birrell. The only previous head-to-head match between the two was won by Sorana Cîrstea in 2023 at Indian Wells. Meanwhile, Romanian Gabriela Ruse lost in the first round at Wimbledon, being defeated by American Caty McNally 7-5, 6-3. Jaqueline Cristian and Irina Begu were also eliminated in the first round, making Sorana Cîrstea the only Romanian among the four players in the main draw at Wimbledon to advance to the second round.
