Talks.  President Nicuşor Dan has invited the leaders of the former ruling coalition – the Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania – for a new round of talks, in an attempt to break the political deadlock. The meeting has been set for Monday as the president says he “doesn’t feel that a solution is taking shape” with respect to the formation of a government with full powers. President Dan has again said the responsibility for building a majority does not lie with him but with the parties, which should feel pressure from the people. Following its withdrawal from the government, the Social Democratic on May 5th voted to bring down the minority government in a no-confidence motion also backed by the ultranationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians, in opposition.

Economy. Romania’s trade balance deficit in the first five months of the year stood at 13.506 billion euros, down 6.2% compared to the same period last year, according to data released on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics. Compared to the same period last year, exports rose by 2.4% and imports by 0.1%. Meanwhile, according to the National Institute of Statistics, Romania’s economy stagnated in the first quarter of the year relative to the final three months of 2025 and contracted compared to the same period last year.

Population. Romania’s population will drop to 15.633 million in 2080 from 19.043 million in January 2025, according to the latest forecast by the National Institute of Statistics published on Friday ahead of World Population Day on July 11. According to this estimate, the number of the resident population could drop by 3.410 million by 2080 compared to the level registered at the beginning of last year. In this context, the young population (under the age of 15) and adults (between the ages of 15 and 64) will see a drop of 13.7% and 60.4% respectively, against the reference period, whereas the aging population (65 years and older) will go up to account for 25.9% of the total. The world population is expected to grow in the following 50-60 years, reaching a peak of roughly 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s. After this peak, the world population will gradually decrease down to 10.2 billion towards the end of the century. According to Eurostat, Romania came sixth in the EU in terms of the size of its resident population on January 1, 2025.

Corvette. The new corvette of the Romanian Army, Contraamiral August Roman – 261, arrived on Friday in the Constanța military port (southeast). Built in Turkey, the corvette cost over 220 million euros. The vessel features modern defensive and offensive capabilities compatible with NATO equipment and that of EU partners and is designed to carry out surveillance, reconnaissance, patrol, maritime interdiction, and search-and-rescue missions, as well as combat operations across land, air and underwater. Romania has signed contracts for four additional new vessels, and within less than a year, five factories will be revitalised to manufacture military hardware domestically, said Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruță. The new corvette officially entered into the service of the Romanian Navy on June 20 and has a crew of 85 military sailors.

Wildfires. Romania stands in solidarity with the people affected by wildfires in Spain, southern France, Portugal, and Greece, and is ready to support its European partners, president Nicușor Dan said on social media on Friday. “In these difficult times, Romania reaffirms its readiness to stand by and assist our fellow European partners amid the growing challenges posed by climate change, extreme heat and wildfires”, the Romanian president emphasised. According to France Presse, wildfires have killed at least 12 people in Andalusia (in southern Spain). Around 500 firefighters have been deployed and hundreds of people have been evacuated. Meanwhile, France is in the grips of a new heatwave, the third long one since the start of the summer. The government has implemented an unprecedented emergency plan, as temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius are expected over the coming days.

Anniversary. At the beginning of next year, the European Parliament will hold a special session to mark the 20th anniversary of Romania’s accession to the European Union. The meeting will take place at the request of MEP Victor Negrescu, a Vice-President of the European Parliament. He says the anniversary is a milestone for both Romania and the European project, providing an opportunity to take stock of the transformations that have taken place in the last two decades and reflect on future priorities. “Over these years, Romania has benefited from freedom of movement, significant investments, European funding, opportunities for young people and the development of local communities. However, it is also time to look ahead and discuss the role our country can play in the European project over the next 20 years,” Victor Negrescu said. (CM)
