FRANCE – The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, is attending today’s military parade in Paris marking France’s National Day, following his participation on Monday in the Coalition of the Willing for Ukraine. Led by the United Kingdom and France, the Coalition brings together more than 35 countries, which have reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining military support for Ukraine and to establishing robust security guarantees once the conflict has come to an end. The sacrifice and determination of the Ukrainian people in continuing to defend themselves against Russian aggression will be further supported through the provision of military equipment and weaponry, supplied by European partners, in keeping with agreements announced in Paris. President Nicușor Dan reiterated that continued support for Ukraine, across all relevant areas, remains essential to the stability and security of the entire region.

SUMMIT – President Nicușor Dan will travel to Kyiv on Wednesday to participate in the fifth Ukraine – South East Europe Summit, the Presidential Administration has announced. The visit to Kyiv follows an invitation extended by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Ukraine – South East Europe Summit, established in 2023 in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, serves as a regional platform for supporting Ukraine and for jointly addressing the far-reaching consequences of the conflict across the wider region. It brings together countries with shared interests in the fields of security, economic cooperation, energy and infrastructure connectivity, resilience, and the countering of hybrid threats. President Nicușor Dan’s participation in the Summit once again underscores Romania’s solidarity with Ukraine and its unequivocal support for the country’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, the Presidential Administration stated. During the Summit, President Dan will reaffirm Romania’s commitment to continuing its assistance to Ukraine and to contributing to the strengthening of security and resilience in the Black Sea region and South East Europe. The Summit is also significant in terms of advancing the European aspirations of both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. In addition, discussions will focus on regional connectivity, energy security, and resilience.

MISSION – A Romanian Air Force C-27J Spartan aircraft, configured for medical evacuation missions, departed on Tuesday morning from the 90th Airlift Base at Otopeni, near Bucharest, to carry out a humanitarian medical transport mission for a patient with severe burns, operating on the Otopeni–Suceava–Liège route. The mission is being conducted at the request of Romania’s Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) and under the framework of European cooperation mechanisms. Medical assistance and the specialist equipment required throughout the transfer are being provided by a team comprising DSU specialists and medical personnel from the Romanian Ministry of National Defence.

ADDRESS – US President Donald Trump has announced that he will deliver an address on Thursday evening, AFP reports. The speech comes at a time of escalating tensions between the United States and Iran amid the conflict triggered on 28 February by Israeli-American strikes, which has shaken both the Middle East and the global economy. Writing on Truth Social, President Trump stated that the United States would henceforth act as the “guardian of the Strait of Hormuz” and would impose on vessels transiting the strategically important waterway “a levy equivalent to 20% of the value of their cargo”. However, AFP notes that the Strait is governed by international law, which is intended to guarantee freedom of navigation.

FOOTBALL – World Cup runners-up France and reigning European champions Spain face each other today in the first semi-final of the FIFA World Cup, hosted by the North American nations. France, two-time world champions following their triumphs in 1998 and 2018, are aiming to reach a third consecutive World Cup final. In 2022, France were beaten by Argentina on penalties. Argentina will take on England on Wednesday in the tournament’s second semi-final. Argentina have won the World Cup three times, while Spain and England have each lifted the trophy once.

WEATHER – Across Romania, daytime temperatures will rise compared with the previous day, with hot weather expected in the western and southern regions, where increasing thermal discomfort is forecast. Atmospheric instability will be pronounced across most mountainous areas, as well as parts of the north-west, centre, and east of the country. These regions will experience periods of increased cloud cover, heavy showers, thunderstorms, and isolated hail. Maximum temperatures will range from 23°C to 34°C. In Bucharest, the forecast is for variable cloud cover and a high of 30°C. For Wednesday, meteorologists have issued a Yellow Weather Warning for atmospheric instability, torrential downpours, and strong winds affecting the country’s mountainous regions. (EE)
