SAFE – On Friday, Romania signed the last two contracts for the procurement of helicopters and radar systems through the SAFE program. The total value of the two packages exceeds one billion Euros. Acting Minister of Defense Radu Miruţă stated that, to date, fixed-term contracts totaling over 7 billion Euros have been signed through the SAFE program. The total investments made by the Ministry of National Defense through the European SAFE Program amount to 8 billion 330 million Euros, the majority of which goes to the German company Rheinmetall, with which seven contracts have been signed.

Strike – In Romania, healthcare union members are preparing for a warning strike. The Sanitas Federation has announced that the protest will take place on Monday at more than 400 healthcare facilities across the country. Thus, between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., only emergency services will be provided, and medical activity will be reduced to one-third of normal levels. Employees are dissatisfied with their reduced incomes, the staff shortage, and with the provisions that could be included in the new public sector pay law. Iulian Pope, president of Sanitas, says that healthcare workers have had their access to meal allowances and vacation vouchers cut off, a number of important bonuses have been reduced, and, most importantly, hiring has been frozen. Healthcare union representatives warn that an all-out strike could begin on July 28.

Justice – The European Commission warns Romania that it is making no headway in investigating corruption within the judiciary. On Friday, the EU executive published its new Report on the Rule of Law in the EU, which shows that the country has made no further progress regarding safeguards for the independence of senior prosecutors and the organization of the Judicial Police. The Commission is calling for legislative work on these issues to resume. Furthermore, there has been no progress in the effective investigation and prosecution of corruption within the judiciary. On the other hand, the European Commission states that laws adopted in recent years have helped improve the framework governing the independence and functioning of the judiciary. However, it notes that the broader assessment of the system was suspended following the decision of the High Court of Cassation and Justice. Brussels recommends that Romania continue this assessment and improve the efficiency and governance of the judiciary.

George Enescu Competition – The 20th anniversary edition of the “George Enescu” International Competition, held in Bucharest from August 29 to September 19, sets two historic records: the highest number of entries (819) and the broadest international participation in the competition’s history (55 countries). According to the organizers, this participation confirms the growing interest among young musicians from around the world in this platform for artistic excellence. The largest number of entries come from China, South Korea, Romania, the U.S., and Japan, followed by Italy, Germany, France, Russia, Spain, Poland, and Taiwan, along with participants from dozens of other countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Oceania, and the Middle East. The finals will take place alongside the National Radio Orchestra and the “George Enescu” Philharmonic, under the baton of internationally renowned conductors. Organized by ARTEXIM, this year’s anniversary edition has the theme “In Search of Excellence.”

Danube – The Danube River, which flows through Europe from Germany to Romania, is at its lowest flow rate in the last 30 years, and Romanian hydrologists warn that the downward trend will continue in the coming days. Restrictions on irrigation and navigation have been imposed in some sections. The low water level has created critical areas that force boaters to reduce their cargo or wait, and the speed of vessels must be adjusted in certain sections. Hydrologists expect that starting Monday, July 20, due to the rainfall forecast for the Danube basin, the river’s flow rate at the point where it enters Romania will increase. The lowest flow rate recorded at the river’s entry into the country was 1,400 cubic meters per second, recorded in 1985. Currently, it stands at 1,750 cubic meters per second.

London – In the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham, former mayor of Greater Manchester and a popular political figure in the UK, was named leader of the Labor Party on Friday at an extraordinary convention, the final step before he officially becomes head of the government in London on Monday. Burnham secured the support of 95% of his party’s 403 members of Parliament and eight of the 11 trade unions affiliated with the party. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on June 22. On Monday, after being received by King Charles III, Andy Burnham is expected to announce the composition of his new government, according to news agencies. (LS)
