PAY LAW – The revised draft of Romania’s new public sector pay law, which has only just been released for public consultation, continues to face strong opposition from trade unions. They argue that the changes from the previous version are minimal and warn that the legislation would reduce the incomes of many public sector employees. Trade unions representing education and healthcare workers are threatening large-scale protests and a general strike. Meanwhile, leaders of the Sanitas Federation have confirmed plans to go ahead with a two-hour warning strike on Monday morning. At the same time, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which holds the largest number of seats in Parliament, has launched fresh consultations with public sector representatives. The party says it will gather all the unions’ objections into a package of amendments and has warned that it could block the bill’s passage through Parliament if it fails to gain broad support. A final political decision on whether to approve or reject the draft is expected on Tuesday, when the leaders of the former governing coalition – PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR – are due to meet again to discuss the legislation. The adoption of the law is a key milestone under Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which is approaching its final stage after being delayed for several years. If Parliament fails to pass the bill within a month, Romania will permanently lose nearly 800 million euros in funding.
AVIATION DAY – Although Romanian Aviation Day is officially celebrated on 20 July, the feast day of Saint Elijah, the spiritual patron of Romanian aviators, the occasion was marked in advance with an impressive air show featuring dozens of military and civilian aircraft. The Romanian Air Force took part with a range of aircraft, including F-16 Fighting Falcons, Hercules and Spartan transport planes, and IAR helicopters. They were joined by aircraft from Romania’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Romanian Aeroclub, as well as planes from the Italian Air Force and the UK’s Royal Air Force. Military and religious ceremonies in honour of Romania’s fallen aviators, together with parades and other official events, were also held.
WEATHER – Over the next 24 hours, the weather across Romania will remain generally unsettled. Western, southern and south-eastern regions will also experience hot conditions. In the south, a heatwave is expected, accompanied by severe thermal discomfort, with the Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) forecast to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. Periods of atmospheric instability are expected across the eastern half of the country and in the mountainous areas. These will bring torrential rain, thunderstorms, strong wind gusts, squalls with speeds of 50 to 70 km/h, isolated gusts exceeding 80 km/h, and small to medium-sized hail. Maximum temperatures will range from 23 to 35 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, several counties in central Romania were placed under a red code alert for torrential rain and hail. Road traffic on a national route in the mountainous region was disrupted after flash flooding swept across the carriageway. In the town of Bușteni, a cloudburst delivering up to 70 litres of rain per square metre caused flooding on several streets. Emergency crews were deployed to pump out floodwater and assist residents affected by the severe weather. The national meteorological service has also issued a number of orange and yellow warnings for atmospheric instability, strong winds, squalls and heavy rainfall, including for Bucharest. In addition, new yellow warnings for extreme heat, severe thermal discomfort and tropical nights remain in force until Tuesday morning for several counties in southern Romania and the capital.
WAR – Several powerful explosions shook Ukraine’s capital overnight after the country’s armed forces reported that Russian ballistic missiles were approaching Kyiv. At least one person was killed and two others were injured. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said fires broke out at a student residence, an apartment building and a supermarket. Several non-residential buildings and warehouses were also damaged, while vehicles and office buildings caught fire in different parts of the capital. The Russian attack came a day after Ukrainian drones struck two logistics centres in Russia, killing at least eight people, according to local authorities.
ARREST – Influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate have been arrested in Miami, according to the US Marshals Service, the federal agency responsible for apprehending fugitives, AFP reports. Shortly afterwards, Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service said it had requested their arrest and extradition in connection with a criminal case involving allegations of human trafficking, rape, sexual assault and other sexual offences, including offences involving a minor. According to the BBC, the case, opened by British prosecutors in May last year, concerns three alleged victims of Andrew Tate and one alleged victim of Tristan Tate. The two brothers were also arrested by Romania’s anti-organised crime prosecutors, DIICOT, in 2022, after moving to Romania in 2016. They were investigated on suspicion of human trafficking and rape. Although they were later released from house arrest and judicial supervision, the criminal investigation in Bucharest remains ongoing. (EE)
