Aviation Day. The modernisation of the Air Force is a strategic priority for Romania, and major procurement programmes, as well as ongoing training activities, are enhancing the operational capacity of this branch of the military and ensuring the integration of the latest capabilities, President Nicuşor Dan said on Romanian Aviation and Air Force Day. The President highlighted the sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in combat missions, in theaters of operations, during military exercises, or while responding to emergencies. In the current security context, marked by the Russian Federation’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine and persistent challenges to regional stability, the Romanian Air Force plays a particularly important role in defending national airspace and in strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence posture in the Black Sea region and on the Alliance’s eastern flank, Nicuşor Dan also said.
Strike. Trade unionists in the Romanian healthcare system are considering a general strike next week to protest against the draft law on public sector wages and working conditions. The Sanitas Federation held a warning strike on Monday in several hospitals across the country, where operations were reduced to one-third capacity for two hours, with only emergency cases being handled during this time. Sanitas representatives said the new public sector wage bill perpetuates pay inequities between different professional groups and leads to significant income losses for some employees. The bill drafted by the Ministry of Labour changes the way in which public sector salaries are calculated, introducing a 12-tier pay scale and lowering the cap on bonuses from 30% to 20% of the base salary. A final political decision on whether to approve or scrap the bill is expected on Tuesday, when leaders of the former governing coalition are set to meet again to discuss the legislation. Adopting the pay bill is a key milestone in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. If Parliament fails to pass the bill within a month, Romania stands to lose nearly 800 million euros worth of EU funding.
Gas. OMV Petrom and Romgaz said they finalised the installation of an offshore production platform for Neptun Deep, Romania’s biggest natural gas project. Work is on schedule for production to begin in 2027, which will help consolidate energy security for Romania and the whole region. Located in waters that are around 120 meters deep, the platform, called Neptun Alpha, is over 225 meters tall and weighs 16,500 tonnes, according to a press release. The platform is fully automated and can be operated remotely. Representatives from the two companies also reported the completion of six out of the ten development wells, as well as the installation of the 160-kilometer pipeline connecting the platform to the shore.
Weather. The Weather Service in Bucharest has issued an orange code alert and a number of yellow code alerts for atmospheric instability, heavy downpours, strong winds and storms, in place across half of Romania until Tuesday evening. An orange code warning was in effect on Monday for heavy downpours in the east, south, and locally in the Southern and Eastern Carpathians. A yellow code alert has also been issued for a heat wave and high thermal discomfort, valid through Tuesday in nine counties in the south of the country and in the capital Bucharest. (CM)
