Romanian Army shoots down another Russian drone entering Romanian airspace and other international and domestic news.

Drone. A new drone was shot down this morning in the Romanian airspace, 10 km west of Sfântu Gheorghe, in the Danube Delta. The announcement was made by the country’s president, Nicușor Dan, who said the drone was shot down by a Romanian pilot flying an F-16 aircraft. Defence minister Radu Miruță explained that the drone was detected by the ministry radars when it entered the Romanian airspace and was hit 12 minutes later. The ministry said the operation to shoot down the drone was conducted in safe conditions, in an uninhabited area near the border with Ukraine. According to a press release, the defence ministry is constantly monitoring the airspace and is in close contact with allied structures. A day earlier, Romania had shot down the first drone to make an unauthorised entry into its national airspace. The drone was also destroyed by a Romanian Air Force F-16 aircraft, after Italian Eurofighter jets part of the NATO mission had unsuccessfully tried to shoot it down. The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Friday evening that the drone was the Shahed model used by the Russian military. Residents in several counties across the eastern and southeastern parts of the country received warning text messages on their phones. No one was injured. Speaking to Fox News, acting foreign minister Oana Țoiu said Romania’s borders and its sovereignty are non-negotiable and that the army and the NATO air policing forces will continue to monitor the land border, the Danube and the Black Sea. She emphasised that the key to enhanced security is having peace on Romania’s borders.
BBC Proms. The Ministry of economy, digitalisation, entrepreneurship and tourism in Bucharest is promoting Romania as a tourist destination on a special page included in the 85,000 official brochures for 63 of the BBC Proms concerts, the oldest and one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world and held every summer at London’s Royal Albert Hall. On August 5, Alexandra Dariescu will become the first Romanian female pianist to perform at the BBC Proms and the first Romanian musician to be part of the festival’s line-up in the last three decades. The concert’s special brochure, running in 1,200 copies, will feature not only the promotional page for Romania as a tourist destination but also a page dedicated to Romanian cultural diplomacy in the United Kingdom.
Festival. Sighișoara, in central Romania, is playing host to the 31st edition of the Medieval Art Festival, the country’s longest-running event of its kind. Activities for visitors of all ages include knightly tournaments, medieval music and theater performances, parades, interactive workshops in glassmaking, pottery, tailoring, and engraving, fire-juggling demonstrations, and dishes inspired by local cuisine. Held within the only inhabited medieval citadel in Southeast Europe, the Medieval Sighișoara Festival takes place under the High Patronage of Her Majesty Margareta, the Custodian of the Romanian Crown.
Fencing. Three Romanian fencers, George Dragomir, Vlad Covaliu and Radu Niţu, qualified on Friday for the main draw of the men’s individual sabre event at the World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong. Earlier, Emma Şonţ and Natalia Constantin qualified for the main draw of the women’s individual épée event, while Amalia Covaliu secured her place in the main draw of the women’s individual sabre event. Romania has 11 fencers at the World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong, which is taking place from July 22 to 30. (CM)
