The National Anthem Day was marked in Romania through a series of events. The Romanian Defence Minister Mircea Dusa and the Home Affairs Minister Radu Stroe attended a military ceremony. A sergeant who served in Iraq, Daniel Porumb, seriously wounded while on a mission, was advanced and decorated. Many cities in the country hosted similar ceremonies, celebrating the anthem, which was sung for the first time on July 29th, 1848. A symbol of unity for the Romanian Revolution of 1848, “Awaken, Romanians!” became national anthem after the anti-communist revolution of December 1989.
