Fiscal measures – The coalition government PSD-PNL-USR-UDMR in Bucharest adopted, on Friday, a package of fiscal measures, which will be approved by assuming responsibility in Parliament in a session to be held on Monday. On Saturday and Sunday, the MPs can submit amendments to the project. Previously, the liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan had consultations with the representatives of the employers’ associations and trade unions about these proposed measures to reduce the country’s budget deficit and increase economic credibility. The employers’ associations called for fiscal predictability and combating evasion, while trade unions expressed concern about the budgetary impact on education. The fiscal package presented on Thursday by the PM provides for a combination of tax increases and spending cuts, applied at least until the end of 2026, with the aim of reducing the deficit and eliminating the risk of Romania being downgraded by international rating agencies to the junk category, not recommended for investments. The measures have also been discussed with the European Commission and, according to the Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare, there are signs that, if they are approved before the ECOFIN Council on July 8, the assessment from Brussels will be a good one. However, they will lead, for a period of time, to a decrease in the standard of living of the majority of Romanians.
