Government. Romanian President Nicuşor Dan has invited the leaders of the former governing coalition—the PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR—to further talks in an effort to resolve the political crisis. The meeting will take place on Monday, as the president stated that he “does not feel that a solution is emerging” for the formation of a government with full powers. He reiterated that the responsibility for forming a majority does not lie with him, but with the parties, which should feel the pressure from the people. Nicuşor Dan recalled that the two previous nominations, Eugen Tomac and Adrian Veştea, were made following discussions with political leaders, stressing that in both cases he had reasonable expectations that they would pass through Parliament without the support of the AUR (a nationalist, extremist party). The leaders of the former governing coalition have not yet changed their positions regarding the formation of a government, while AUR representatives argue that the current crisis is being artificially prolonged by a new round of negotiations and insist on early parliamentary elections.
Moldova. The European Parliament calls for the immediate opening of all negotiation clusters with the Republic of Moldova that have not yet been launched, according to the annual report on Chisinau’s European path, adopted Wednesday in plenary session. The report highlights Moldova’s progress in reforming the judiciary and combating corruption, but draws attention to the need to reduce the influence of oligarchs in politics, the economy, and the media. The European Parliament calls for additional support to strengthen the resilience of Moldovan institutions, enhance cybersecurity, and counter attempts at destabilization by Russia. Regarding Transnistria (a predominantly Russian-speaking separatist region in eastern Moldova), the text reiterates the Parliament’s long-standing commitment to the territorial integrity of Moldova and to a peaceful resolution of the conflict. According to the MEPs, Russia must withdraw all its military personnel, military equipment, and ammunition from the area.
Summit. The joint declaration of the NATO leaders, who met on Tuesday and Wednesday in Ankara, reiterates the commitment to collective defense under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty and describes Russia as a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security and stability. The document also highlights the importance of defense spending. The allies declare their unity in unwavering support for Ukraine in its effort to defend its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. For 2026, they commit to providing Ukraine with military equipment, assistance, and training worth 70 billion euros. President Nicuşor Dan, who attended the meeting, believes that the declaration issued at the end of the NATO Summit in Ankara is proof that the allies have honored their commitments regarding defense spending.
Economy. Romania’s economy contracted by 1.2% on a gross basis in the first three months of this year, compared with the same period in 2025, and by 1.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to provisional data released today by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). The estimated Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the first quarter of 2026 was 499.738 billion lei at current prices in nominal terms, and in real terms, down 1.1% compared to the first quarter of 2025. On a gross basis, the estimated GDP for the first quarter of 2026 was 405.907 billion lei at current prices, down—in real terms—by 1.2% compared to the first quarter of 2025.
Firefighters. Romanian firefighters deployed to France responded on Wednesday in the Trevillach–Montalba area (south), where they monitored the situation and worked to mitigate the effects of the fires that have broken out in recent days. According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), the missions were carried out in cooperation with two French crews. For Thursday, the risk of wildfires remains significant in southern France. Romanian firefighters remain ready to intervene, under the coordination of their French counterparts, whenever the situation on the ground requires it, thereby helping to strengthen the European response to wildfires and protect communities and the environment, the IGSU added. We note that this month, 40 Romanian firefighters and several specialized wildfire-fighting vehicles are deployed in France.
Exercise. The frigate “King Ferdinand,” carrying an IAR 330 Puma Naval helicopter, and the minehunter M 271 “Captain Constantin Dumitrescu,” as part of the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Task Force, are participating from July 9 to 20 in the multinational exercise BREEZE 26, the Romanian Naval Forces (FNR) announced on Thursday. The training exercise is organized by the Bulgarian Naval Forces and is taking place in the port of Burgas and in maritime areas of the Black Sea, with the primary objective of strengthening security in the region. According to the FNR, the Romanian crews will train alongside those of partner ships from Bulgaria and Turkey. The frigate “King Ferdinand” has a crew of 240 military personnel, while the minesweeper M 271 “Captain Constantin Dumitrescu” has a crew of 44 sailors.
Iran. The U.S. Army has announced that it has completed its latest round of airstrikes in Iran, targeting 90 sites, some near the Strait of Hormuz. Power outages were reported in several areas, including in the north, where a railway bridge was damaged. In retaliation, Tehran announced that its military has struck U.S. assets in neighboring countries. In a post on social media, Washington stated that the objective is to further weaken Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the BBC reports. Meanwhile, the funeral for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei—who was killed on the very first day of the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, which began on Saturday—concludes today with his burial.
Football. Universitatea Craiova (south), Romania’s football champion, defeated the Belarusian team ML Vitebsk 4-1 on Wednesday evening in Mezokovesd, Hungary, in the first leg of the first qualifying round of the Champions League. The second leg will be played on July 15 at home. If it advances past ML Vitebsk, Universitatea Craiova will face the winner of the match between Borac Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and PFC Levski Sofia (Bulgaria) in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The two teams tied 1-1 in Banja Luka in the first leg. (MI)
