NATO – The North Atlantic Council, which met Wednesday in Brussels, decided that defense in the Black Sea region needs to be strengthened. The ambassadors of NATO member states expressed their solidarity with Romania after the recent drone incidents, meaning Bucharest could receive support to defend itself against these military devices, both aerial and maritime that, amid the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine, often enter Romanian national territory. President Nicușor Dan welcomed the outcome of the meeting in Brussels, emphasizing that it is important for NATO to reinforce its presence and capabilities in Romania.
ECONOMY – Romanian deputies adopted on Wednesday the draft law that extends the cap on commercial markups for basic food products until the end of the year, adding six more months beyond the original expiration date of June 30. The measure covers items such as plain white bread, cow’s milk and dairy products, flour, cornmeal, eggs, sunflower oil, as well as fresh chicken and pork. For these products, the commercial markup cannot exceed 20%. The cap has been in place since 2023. According to the authorities, maintaining it is intended to provide stability for consumers and limit the impact of rising prices on household budgets. The bill has also been approved by the Senate, and the Chamber of Deputies is the decision making body in this case.
GOVERNMENT – In Romania, the designated prime minister, Eugen Tomac, will officially send the governing program to the political parties, saying it addresses the country’s economic and social emergencies. He also stated that, in order to move past political disputes, he is willing to make compromises regarding the list of ministers. On Wednesday, President Nicușor Dan called on the parties to act responsibly. PNL, USR and UDMR, which make up the current interim government, have said they do not believe in the idea of a technocratic cabinet, while PSD conditions its support on canceling austerity measures and making changes to VAT and labor taxation.
ROYAL HOUSE – Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania, and Prince Radu met on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace with King Charles III. The meeting in the British capital was private and is part of a three day visit the Romanian Royal Family is making to London, according to a Facebook post. Such meetings reflect the historical and family ties between the two Royal Houses. FINANCE – Romania’s Finance Minister, Alexandru Nazare, is taking part on Thursday and Friday in a series of European financial meetings in Luxembourg: the Eurogroup meeting, the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN). According to a statement from the ministry in Bucharest, dialogue with European institutions remains essential for the stability of public finances, the protection of EU funds, and the support of investments. Nazare emphasized that Romania must be actively present in all European discussions concerning economic stability, investment financing, and the EU’s fiscal rules. He added that the relationship with the European Commission, ECOFIN, the EIB, and the European Investment Fund (EIF) is a key part of keeping Romania credible, financially viable, and connected to major European investment instruments. He also noted that European funds, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), SAFE, and EIB instruments are crucial for supporting development, infrastructure, energy, defense, and the competitiveness of the Romanian economy.
HORMUZ – Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Thursday that they attacked American bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan in response to an earlier offensive launched by the United States military, according to EFE. Iranian forces also stated that they targeted the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain using drones. The offensive comes after the U.S. military carried out new strikes on several targets in Iran on Wednesday as a “response to the aggressions” of the Islamic Republic, according to the report from U.S. Central Command. It announced that the attacks targeted military surveillance capabilities, communication systems and air defense positions inside Iran. Although Washington and Tehran are engaged in negotiations for a peace agreement mediated by countries such as Pakistan, this week saw several attacks that the U.S. initially justified by the downing of a helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
