CONCERN Romania’s interim Foreign Minister, Oana Toiu talked on the phone on Thursday with her Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, sharing her concern about the propagation of the effects of the war in Ukraine to its neighbours. ‘Neighbours and strategic partners build stronger relationships through open dialogue and coordinated preventive action to manage crisis situations’ Toiu wrote on X platform. She says she has reiterated Romania’s condemnation of the illegal aggression war waged by Russia and the joint commitment to reaching an armistice and durable peace. Toiu has also mentioned the importance of improving the mechanisms of early warning and presenting the operative situation as well as the common responsibility of keeping the Black Sea safe and protecting the strategic infrastructure, the humanitarian corridors and navigable waterways.
TALKS Liberals who convened on Thursday decided they would not be voting for the technocratic cabinet proposed by the Prime Minister-designate, Eugen Tomac, in Parliament. The PNL decision has been unanimously made, because as the Liberals say, the government formula proposed by the Prime Minister, neither enjoys political support nor has the power to carry on the reforms needed. The PNL President, Ilie Bolojan, says a technocratic government is weaker than a minority one and stands no chances to survive. On Wednesday, President Nicusor Dan made an appeal to all parties for responsibility. The PNL, USR and UDMR, which are making the incumbent interim government, say they do not believe in the formula of a technocratic government, while the PSD is conditioning its support on the cancellation of the austerity measures, changes in the VAT and labor taxes.
MAE 21 people living in Northern Ireland have so far applied for consular assistance from the Romanian authorities in an attempt to get travel documents following the latest wave of violence in Belfast, sources with the Romanian Foreign Ministry have announced. These persons are 20 Romanian citizens, 13 adults, 7 children and a foreign national. On Thursday, Romania’s consul in Edinburgh went to Belfast for talks with the police and local authorities on the tense situation in that country. Roughly 20 thousand Romanians are living in Northern Ireland. The homes of three Romanian families have been vandalized during the latest violent events in Belfast and one family has been relocated with assistance from their relatives. The Romanian citizens are safe now and have voiced their intention to come back to Romania as soon as possible. Hundreds of protesters attacked the police and set vehicles on fire in a wave of violence against immigrants following a stabbing attack by a Sudanese refugee.
NATO The North Atlantic Council, which met Wednesday in Brussels, decided that defense in the Black Sea region needs to be strengthened. The ambassadors of NATO member states expressed their solidarity with Romania after the recent drone incidents, meaning Bucharest could receive support to defend itself against these military devices, both aerial and maritime that, amid the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine, often enter Romanian national territory. President Nicușor Dan welcomed the outcome of the meeting in Brussels, emphasizing that it is important for NATO to reinforce its presence and capabilities in Romania.
ECONOMY Romanian deputies adopted on Wednesday the draft law that extends the cap on commercial markups for basic food products until the end of the year, adding six more months beyond the original expiration date of June 30. The measure covers items such as plain white bread, cow’s milk and dairy products, flour, cornmeal, eggs, sunflower oil, as well as fresh chicken and pork. For these products, the commercial markup cannot exceed 20%. The cap has been in place since 2023. According to the authorities, maintaining it is intended to provide stability for consumers and limit the impact of rising prices on household budgets. The bill has also been approved by the Senate, and the Chamber of Deputies is the decision making body in this case.
