NEGOTIATIONS – A new prime minister could be nominated next week when the president and parliamentary parties could reach an agreement on the new ruling coalition. The announcement was made on Friday by Senate Speaker, Liberal Ilie Bolojan, in a press conference where he presented the country’s financial situation and some of the conclusions of recent talks on the topic of measures to reduce the budget deficit. Tax increases are inevitable, regardless of the structure of the new cabinet or who the prime minister will be. Even so, reaching a deficit target of 7% at the end of the year is almost impossible, the former interim president said. The leaders of the four pro-European parties in Parliament and experts of the technical working group continued political negotiations this week in an attempt to reach consensus on measures to reduce the budget deficit. PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR currently have different views regarding the flat tax rate, the increase in health insurance contributions and the reduction of public spending. Although they did agree on some points, such as the need to reduce budget spending, maintain large investments or the need to change some taxes, the solutions differ from one party to another. President Nicuşor Dan believes that progress has been made, and the four parties are quite close to the final version of the budget recovery package. On Monday, the head of state invited representatives of the major trade union blocs, dissatisfied with the tax reform proposals, for a round of talks.

DEFICIT – Romania risks being penalized even more on international financial markets unless it presents a solid and credible plan to reduce the budget deficit, economist Cristian Popa, member of the Board of Directors of the National Bank, said. He believes that a country’s fiscal policy must take into account a long-term perspective, not electoral emergencies. On the other hand, concern is growing among the business community, as well as tension in society due to the delay in a political agreement for the creation of a new government that will assume budgetary recovery measures, representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania have warned. At the same time, business people also say, the protracted negotiations send negative signals to institutional partners, financiers and rating agencies. AmCham states that it supports the flat tax rate, urgent restructuring of public spending and a significant reduction of waste as the foundations of a sustainable recovery.

PARTNERSHIP – Romania is ready to work with president Donald Trump to achieve the full potential of its partnership with the USA, the president of Romania, Nicușor Dan, said on Saturday, marking 145 years since diplomatic ties were established between Romania and the United States of America. “We are celebrating not just the numerous stages of our cooperation, but also the friendship that underlay a robust strategic partnership”, the president wrote on social media. In turn, Romania’s Interim Prime Minister, Cătălin Predoiu, said Bucharest is ready to boost cooperation with its “key strategic partner” in the fields of defense, security, and economy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also conveyed its firm commitment to continue close cooperation with the USA and readiness to consolidate the Strategic Partnership. “In light of current geopolitical and technological dynamics, which bring new threats, but also new opportunities, the Romanian state continues to invest in developing cooperation with the USA in security matters”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

WARNING –The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday announced it is closely following the security developments in the Middle East. The Ministry expressed deep concern about the possible repercussions on the security situation in the region and believes that any additional escalation could have dramatic consequences in an already volatile context. At the same time, Romania remains committed to maintaining stability in the Middle East and urges all parties to show restraint and return to diplomacy. We firmly support a diplomatic and negotiated solution regarding the Iranian nuclear program– the Ministry also adds in a release, announcing that Romania will continue to coordinate closely with its allies and partners. The ministry’s immediate concern is the safety of Romanian citizens in the region. At the same time, the embassies and consular offices of Romania are fully mobilized and ready to provide assistance.

IRAN-ISRAEL CONFLICT – “Radiation levels remained unchanged after the Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites and are within normal parameters, indicating the absence of external radiological impact on the population or the environment”, although “a radiological and chemical contamination has been reported inside the facilities”, IAEA director, Rafael Grossi, told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. According to the BBC, all parties stressed that the only way forward is dialogue and diplomacy. Concerns were expressed about the attacks on nuclear facilities and the possible consequences on the environment and the population. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also called on Iran and Israel to end the escalation, adding that peace and diplomacy must prevail. In turn, Pope Leo appealed for “reason”, calling on both nations to pursue dialogue, stating he was following the developments with “great concern”. Iran and Israel continued to bomb each other on Saturday, despite international calls to stop the escalation of the conflict. On the other hand, US president Donald Trump called on Iran to reach an agreement on its nuclear program, warning against even more brutal Israeli attacks. Iran said that dialogue with the USA on Tehran’s nuclear program was “meaningless” after the Israeli attacks and accused Washington of supporting the attack.

SCHENGEN – Romania’s Foreign Minister, Emil Hurezeanu, attended Saturday’s anniversary ceremony marking 40 years since the creation of the Schengen Area, hosted by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. According to a Ministry statement, in his speech, Minister Hurezeanu emphasized the historical importance of Romania’s Schengen membership and its role in strengthening the cohesion, unity and resilience of the European project. This is the first anniversary for Romania as a full Schengen member, after our country joined the area on January 1, 2025. At the same time, Emil Hurezeanu highlighted the importance of the Schengen area for the protection of freedoms and increasing the prosperity of European citizens, as well as the common responsibility to protect free movement and strengthen European internal security.
