TALKS The latest round of talks, which brought together in Bucharest leaders of the main ruling parties, the PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR, the National Minorities Group and the country’s President, Nicusor Dan, ended without any decision yet. In a Facebook post, the head of the Romanian state says that talks went back again to the political deadlock, which on Tuesday he believed was overcome. President Dan says the PNL has shifted position after on Tuesday they decided to endorse a minority PSD government with some conditions regarding the ruling programme. The message conveyed says that there is the responsibility of the parties to negotiate among themselves a majority for any government formula they consider appropriate and the President called on them to resume talks as Romania needs an Executive with full powers.

MEETING Romania’s President Nicusor Dan is in Poland to participate in a meeting hosted by his counterpart, Karol Nawrocki, jointly with the presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Strengthening European security before the multiple threats posed by the aggression war Russia is waging on Ukraine, the instability in the Middle East and the EU future are high on the agenda. According to the presidential administration, President Dan will underline the need for ensuring the unity of the bloc against the challenges facing the continent and will reiterate Romania’s firm commitment to the unity of the allies and the EU and NATO partnerships as a fundament of the common prosperity and security. Dan is also expected to highlight the need for strengthening deterrence and defence on NATO’s eastern flank both form the military viewpoint and from fighting hybrid and cyber-threats.

THEATRE The International Theatre in Sibiu, central Romania, one of the most important and biggest festivals in the world is due to end on Sunday. The present edition included nearly 850 events, which involved the participation of five thousand artists from 83 countries. The suggestive theme this year – SOUL- was meant to explain the human soul, be it of artists or spectators, is way above technology. According to tradition, the festival recommends an informative feature with the most captivating shows of the day so that those present in Sibiu may make the most inspired and appropriate choices. Several shows have been slated for Saturday, including Faust, directed by Silviu Purcarete, and ‘Rave by Ravel’, the recipient of the UNITER award for best choreography. Eight new names were added on the Walk of Fame on Saturday, such as actress Fanny Ardant, conductor Cristian Macelaru and actress Ofelia Popii.

HEAT Germany and Poland are bracing up for a new heat wave with temperatures that might exceed 40 degrees Celsius as the hot air mass that killed scores in Western Europe is moving east. Hot weather alerts have been issued in many European countries, which are also implementing public safety measures. According to scientists, this is the most extended heatwave to be ever registered in the region as almost half of the nearly 800 European cities are presently facing unprecedented levels of thermal stress. In Belgium, organizers have cancelled a reenactment of the Waterloo battle, which led to the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte.

WEATHER Meteorologists have issued code orange alerts for hot weather in Romania’s center, west and north, where thermal discomfort is high and the Temperature-Humidity Index, THI, will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. The highs of the day are expected to stay around 39 degrees centigrade. The heat wave has engulfed the entire country, with highs of 34 degrees in the rest of the territory and a noon reading in Bucharest of 29 degrees.
