Budget. The President of the Social Democratic Party, Sorin Grindeanu, announced on Sunday in an open letter addressed to Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan that his party, a member of Romania’s ruling four-party coalition, will vote in favor of the 2026 state budget bill, but will submit the amendments they deem necessary to ensure the budget reflects their vision as well. The announcement was made following a meeting of the National Political Council. Grindeanu stated that the Social Democrats will submit amendments to ensure full funding for the Solidarity Package, meaning support for 3.5 million families—low-income pensioners, children with disabilities, mothers, or veterans—who have suffered the most from the austerity measures of the past year. Previously, the PNL warned its Social Democratic partner not to turn the budget debate into a “political exercise” and to respect the rules established within the coalition. ‘Romania can no longer afford political games played with public funds. The 2026 budget is built on realistic foundations and adheres to the deficit target of 6.2% of GDP—the threshold that keeps Romania on a credible trajectory in the eyes of financial markets and European partners,’ the PNL stated. The draft budget is expected to receive a final vote next week.

Celebration.
On Sunday, Romanian President Nicuşor Dan conveyed a message on the occasion of the Day of Hungarians Everywhere, stating that this day is an opportunity to recognize the contribution of Hungarians in Romania to the development of our nation through interethnic and intercultural dialogue. The permanent partnership between the majority and minorities has been a key strength in the country’s modernization and full integration into the European Union, the head of state stressed. The Hungarian community in Romania is an important part of society, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said in turn, noting that the strength of a modern nation lies in its ability to turn diversity into an advantage and a resource for development. Hungarian Day was celebrated in several towns in central Romania, where the Hungarian minority is concentrated. It coincided with the 178th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution in Hungary. Hungarian President Sulyok Tamás was invited to the ceremonies.

Protest.
Students from the National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania protested on Saturday in Bucharest to convey a message about the need for adequate funding for education. According to representatives of the organization, education is facing a series of austerity measures adopted as early as last year, which have “directly affected” students’ rights and academic conditions. These include limiting the 90% discount on rail travel to only the route between home and the university campus, cutting the scholarship and social protection fund in half, and eliminating the possibility for students enrolled in tuition-based programs to receive scholarships. The new Minister of Education, Mihai Dimian, spoke with the protesting students. Similar protests have also taken place in other university towns across the country.

War. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is a “temporary inconvenience,” U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday, adding that the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran will end “in the coming weeks,” according to Reuters and AFP. ‘It is true that we are going through a period of short-term disruption, but it is better to do so now than to have a nuclear-armed Iran,’ Wright said in an interview on ABC News. He reaffirmed the Trump administration’s position, rejecting accusations that it had underestimated the risks of Iran closing the strait in its war plans. On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is not currently prepared to reach an agreement to end the war.

Rugby. Romania’s national team lost 29-23 to Spain on Sunday in Madrid in the bronze medal match of the 2026 Rugby Europe Championship. Last season, Romania also played in the third-place match of the Rugby Europe Championship, defeating Portugal 21-7.

Weather.
In Romania, temperatures will be slightly higher than usual for this time of year. Skies will be partly cloudy, with temporary cloud cover in the regions outside the Carpathians. During the day, in the Southern Carpathians at high altitudes, light mixed precipitation is possible, and at night, there will be isolated light rain in the west. Winds will be light to moderate. Highs will range from 9 to 17 degrees, and lows will range from minus 4 to 5 degrees. (MI)
