Talks. The President of Romania, Nicuşor Dan, is having talks today with the leaders of the PSD, PNL, UDMR and USR, on forming the new Government. The Head of State has specified that the new Executive will be formed in the next two to three weeks and that the future Prime Minister must have credibility, as a period of tough economic measures lies ahead. Also, in parallel, the Head of State continues informal discussions with representatives of the main parliamentary parties and those of national minorities regarding the country’s economic and financial situation. On Thursday, Nicusor Dan met with representatives of the business environment, who said that their recommendations for reducing the budget deficit were to reduce and streamline public spending, fiscal-budgetary balancing, curbing bureaucracy and boosting investments. At the same time, the abolition of excessive privileges in the public administration or a reevaluation of the indexations and increases in salaries and pensions expected for next year are needed. “A tax increase would only suffocate the economy” was the firm message conveyed by businesspeople to Nicuşor Dan. The President stressed that, in order to reduce the deficit, concerted efforts are needed to identify constructive solutions.

CCR.
The Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) must quickly draft the reasoning for the decision regarding dignitaries’ declarations of assets and Parliament must amend the law, President Nicuşor Dan has stated today. He added that his declaration of assets will be made public. On Thursday, the CCR decided that the dignitaries’ asset and interest declarations should no longer be published on the website of the National Integrity Agency or on the online pages of other public institutions. At the same time, they also ruled that these declarations should no longer include the incomes and assets owned by their spouses and children.

Ukraine. The Romanian Government has approved the allocation of over 90 million lei (the equivalent of about 18 million euros) for the payment of Romania’s contribution to the European Peace Facility. The amount is intended, in particular, to strengthen Ukraine’s capacity to train its armed forces and its defense capability, in the context of the aggression of the Russian Federation. The mandatory contribution was assumed by Romania, along with the other member states, for the entire duration of its participation in the actions carried out by the European Union through the European Peace Facility.

Alert. The population of Tulcea County, in southeastern Romania, received another RO-ALERT message last night regarding the possibility of objects falling from the airspace, amid the war triggered by Russia in neighboring Ukraine. The air alert lasted 90 minutes, but, according to the authorities, no calls were recorded by the population requesting support. Since September 2023, almost 20 drone fragments have been found on Romanian territory, most of them in Tulcea County.

Floods. Heavy rains in Romania in recent days have caused problems in 200 localities in 30 counties. Over 500 people have been evacuated, according to the latest official report. The counties facing the biggest problems were Braşov and Covasna (center), Botoşani and Neamţ (northeast), Vrancea and Bacău (east). Teams from the Romanian Waters National Administration, firefighters and other structures have been deployed to the affected areas to intervene in managing the situation. Images from the scene show extensive flooded areas, people walking through the water or by boat in an attempt to save property. Meteorologists say that the weather has started to improve, but rain will still be reported over extended areas. (MI)
