Survey – More than two-thirds of Romanians say their main concern for the coming year is the rising cost of living, which is prompting them to cut back on spending, according to a nationwide survey cited by the media in Bucharest. Over 40% of the 1,000 respondents fear a general economic crisis, with the same percentage expressing concern about potential major unforeseen expenses they might face this year. More than half of Romanians are pessimistic about the economy’s outlook over the next 12 months, while nearly a third view the situation with resignation. Nearly 37% believe they will be forced to cut back on spending, 31% expect their financial situation to affect even their essential expenses, and only 3% expect a significant improvement.

Celebration – The Day of Romanians Everywhere, celebrated annually on the last Sunday in May, coincides in 2026 with the major Orthodox feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit or the Pentecost. On this occasion, Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church (the majority denomination), issued a message stating that the Day of Romanians Everywhere is an event of profound spiritual and national identity significance and a good opportunity to reaffirm the shared values that underpin unity: the Romanian language, Romanian culture, and the Christian traditions of the Romanian people. ‘Romanians who left the country for various reasons carried their ancestral faith with them throughout the world, kept the church from home in their hearts, and lived out Orthodox spirituality and holy faith far from their homeland. That is why the Mother Church, caring for her spiritual children, has established numerous parishes and dioceses in the Diaspora to meet the spiritual needs of Romanian Orthodox believers,’ the Patriarch emphasized. According to him, at present, the institution of the family, both in the country and in the Diaspora, faces multiple challenges. In this context, the role of the family and of women in the Church and in society requires a deeper understanding and appreciation, the high-ranking hierarch highlighted. He noted that, in the current context of global migration, the Romanian Orthodox Church is developing and intensifying its mission and pastoral and social responsibility toward Orthodox Romanians living abroad.

Nadia – On Saturday, the famous gymnast Nadia Comăneci was awarded the National Order of the Star of Romania in the rank of Grand Cross by President Nicuşor Dan. According to an official statement, the distinction is awarded on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada, as a sign of deep gratitude, appreciation, and pride for the exceptional dedication and professionalism with which Nadia Comăneci contributed to strengthening Romania’s Olympic prestige, forever redefining the limits of human excellence and inscribing her name in Romania’s sporting and national heritage. At the same time, the president awarded the Romanian Order of Sport Merit, 1st Class  to the Oneşti Municipal Sports Club (in eastern Romania, where Comăneci trained), ‘on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, a unique achievement in Romanian gymnastics, as a sign of high appreciation for the excellence and professionalism with which it contributed to strengthening our country’s Olympic prestige, for the dedication shown in training young generations of champions, as well as for the influence exerted on the evolution of the sport worldwide. Last July, the head of state signed the decree designating 2026 as the ‘Year of Nadia Comăneci’.

Unemployment – Romania’s unemployment rate has risen by 2% over the past year, reaching 6.3% in April. According to data provided by the National Institute of Statistics, more than half a million Romanians are currently unemployed. The data shows a slight decrease compared to March of this year, but a worrying trend in the long term. A gender analysis indicates that women are more affected by the lack of jobs than men. The youth segment remains the most vulnerable, with an unemployment rate of nearly 29%.

Football – The Romanian national football team is preparing for two friendly matches, the first for former star player Gheorghe Hagi in his new term as head coach: against Georgia on June 2 in Tbilisi, and against Wales on June 6 in Bucharest. Hagi was appointed in April, replacing Mircea Lucescu, whose contract ended immediately after the team failed to qualify for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and who passed away a few days later at the age of 80. For Hagi, this is his second stint as national team coach, following his previous tenure from September 1 to November 27, 2001. Appointed immediately after retiring as a player and in his first coaching role, he lasted less than three months in the position, his tenure ending immediately after failing to qualify for the 2002 World Cup following the playoff against Slovenia (1-2 away and 1-1 in Bucharest). During his coaching career, Gheorghe Hagi also managed the Turkish teams Bursaspor and Galatasaray Istanbul, as well as Poli Timişoara, Steaua Bucharest, and Viitorul/Farul Constanţa in Romania. His record includes two national league titles, one Romanian Cup, and one Romanian Super Cup (all with Viitorul/Farul) and one Turkish Cup (with Galatasaray).
