Informal talks following the no-confidence motion
Informal talks continue today between President Nicușor Dan and the leaders of the parties that comprised the former ruling coalition – PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR. The goal is to reach an agreement that would allow for formal consultations and the appointment of a new Prime Minister. While PNL and USR have already committed to remaining in opposition, UDMR is pushing to restore the original coalition and is not currently considering a minority government.
Following its recent departure from the government and its role in the AUR-led no-confidence motion that toppled Ilie Bolojan’s Liberal administration, PSD has announced two potential scenarios: joining a pro-European coalition or moving into the opposition. On the other hand, AUR is waiting for an invitation to the talks to inform the President that it will not support any government in which it does not hold a seat. After discussing with the president, USR leader Dominic Fritz, stated he will not return to the negotiating table with PSD and intends to coordinate his next steps with PNL.
Continued decline of the Leu
The Leu continues to depreciate against the Euro, the European single currency hitting a new record high of 5.26 Lei on Wednesday. Interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare reported that he has held several talks with the credit rating agency Fitch regarding Romania’s political stability following the collapse of the Bolojan Cabinet. He emphasized that Bucharest must remain committed to its fiscal targets and obligations to the European Commission, despite the current political transition.
Fuel prices on the rise
Fuel prices continue to climb, even as global crude oil prices saw a slight drop to $101 per barrel. Gasoline is currently averaging 9.19 Lei per liter, while diesel has reached 9.90 Lei. Romania currently has the 11th cheapest gasoline and the 7th lowest diesel prices in the European Union, a critical factor for the nation’s transport and agricultural sectors.
Security alert: airspace violation in Tulcea County
Two F-16 fighter jets from the Air Policing combat service were scrambled on Thursday from the 86th Air Base in Fetești after ground radars detected a drone briefly entering national airspace in the Chilia area, according to the Ministry of Defense. The ministry reported that the Russian Federation carried out a new series of drone strikes against civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania in Tulcea County. Residents in the area received an early warning message.
The Defense Ministry strongly condemns these irresponsible actions by the Russian Federation, stating they violate international law and pose significant risks to regional security and stability in the Black Sea region.
Space Fest 2026
The Polytechnic University of Bucharest, in partnership with the Romanian and European Space Agencies, is hosting the fourth annual SpaceFEST over May 7-9. The event is the largest festival dedicated to space exploration in Central and Eastern Europe. A highlight of this year’s edition is the arrival of Charles Duke, one of only 12 people to have ever walked on the Moon, marking his first public appearance in Romania. He is joined by NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, a veteran of over 100 days in space.
The festival also features the European SpaceFEST Summit, a forum focused on the future of the aerospace industry in Romania and across Europe.
Negotiations continue in the Middle East conflict
The United States is expecting a response from Iran today regarding a new proposed settlement to end the war. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that Iran appears to want a deal, noting that the last 24 hours of discussions were very productive. The US proposal calls for a 30-day ceasefire extension to provide a window for negotiating a long-term peace treaty. However, there is still no word on two primary US demands: the termination of Iran’s nuclear program and the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The strait has been under an Iranian blockade for over two months, prompting Washington to retaliate last month by blocking Iranian vessels from the maritime corridor.
Commemorating Seville ‘86
The main facade of the Romanian Parliament will be lit up in red and blue this Thursday to celebrate Steaua Bucharest’s legendary victory 40 years ago. The commemorative display was approved on Monday by the Chamber of Deputies following a request from the Steaua Army Sports Club. Official documents describe the May 7, 1986, European Cup win as a landmark of Romanian sporting excellence and a symbol of the nation’s ability to compete at the highest global level. The players and coaches from the historic squad were honored in Parliament on Wednesday and received decorations from the Presidency.

The team will face France this Friday. In contrast, the men’s team was eliminated in the round of 16 following a 3-1 loss to the reigning world champions, China.
