Cabinet meeting

The Government in Bucharest is holding its first meeting today since the motion of no-confidence was adopted in Parliament and Liberal Ilie Bolojan became interim Prime Minister. This is the government’s third meeting this week. The previous two were organized as emergency sessions before the motion to approve key decrees for the progress of National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) projects and the SAFE armament program. Now, the caretaker cabinet can no longer adopt any type of decrees, nor can it initiate bills or new reform policies. According to the Constitution, an interim prime minister can exercise this function for a maximum of 45 days. This is the deadline by which the President should designate a new prime minister and Parliament should vote in a new Government.

PNL and USR form a common front

The National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Save Romania Union (USR) have agreed, through their presidents Ilie Bolojan and Dominic Fritz, to coordinate their next steps in Parliament, in the interim Government, and during consultations with the President, Ilie Bolojan announced. “Our response to the destructive action of PSD against good governance and to the collaboration between PSD and AUR in Parliament is the cooperation of reformist and responsible political forces”, Bolojan said. According to him, the collaboration between the two parties is the guarantee that the modernization of institutions, honesty in public office and the realization of strategic investments will remain on the national agenda.

Statistical data

Consumption in Romania moderated its decline in March compared to the performance of the first two months of this year, but remains negative for the eighth month in a row, according to data provided by the National Statistics Institute. Trade fell in March by 3.2% compared to the same period in 2025, but grew by 2.6% compared to February. Eurostat reports that Romania and Germany are the only European Union member states where the volume of retail trade decreased in March.

Drone attacks

The Russian Defense Ministry announced Friday morning that air defenses shot down over 250 Ukrainian drones after midnight across several regions of Russia, including the capital region, Reuters reports. Moscow unilaterally declared a truce on May 8 and 9, when Russia celebrates the Soviet Union’s victory against Nazi Germany in World War II. The ceasefire was supposed to take effect at midnight. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday that Russian forces continued to strike positions on the front line in Ukraine, which shows that Russia did not make even “an apparent attempt to cease hostilities on the front”. Kyiv had proposed an indefinite truce starting May 6, which was not observed by Russia, Reuters notes.

Romania at the Thessaloniki Book Fair

Over May 7-10, Romania is taking part in the 22nd edition of the Thessaloniki International Book Fair, one of the most important publishing events in Southeast Europe. According to a press release from the Ministry of Culture, this participation aims to promote contemporary Romanian literature, strengthen Romanian-Greek cultural dialogue, and develop editorial relations between the two cultural spheres. Another major goal of Romania’s presence at such international events is to increase the visibility of Romanian literature ahead of 2028, when Romania will be the Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair. A significant part of the Thessaloniki program is organized under the title “Literary Bridges Bucharest – Athens”, a series of events highlighting editorial collaborations and mutual translations between Romania and Greece.

Ana Bărbosu suspended

Romanian gymnast Ana Maria Bărbosu, a bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics, has been provisionally suspended by the International Testing Agency (ITA) due to a violation of anti-doping regulations. More specifically, Bărbosu failed three “whereabouts” tests within a 12-month period. According to anti-doping regulations, elite athletes are required to declare their residence or location for a 60-minute window every day so that agents can conduct out-of-competition tests. Failing to be present at the specified location during this one-hour window constitutes a “missed test” violation. Ana Maria Bărbosu risks a suspension of up to two years.

Sports

Romania’s women’s team faces France today in the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships in London. In the round of 16, Romania moved past Egypt.

In tennis, Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian is playing Czech player Karolina Pliskova today in the second round of the WTA 1,000 tournament in Rome, totaling €7,2 million in prize money. On Thursday, Sorana Cîrstea qualified to the third round of the tournament after defeating Germany’s Tatjana Maria in straight sets. Her next opponent will be world number one, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. Meanwhile, Gabriela Ruse was defeated in Rome by Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in three sets. (VP)
