PARLIAMENT The Chamber of Deputies in Bucharest has invited the country’s Prime Minister, Luca Niculescu, to Parliament next week for the so-called, ‘the Prime Minister’s Hour’ upon a request from the AUR group. Representatives of this opposition nationalist group would like the Prime Minister to present the situation of budgetary execution, debts and due payments, as well as the measures to curb the budget deficit. Several initiatives are in the legislative circuit now such as that aimed at banning the access to social media and online programmes of children under 15. MPs are also expected to hold debates over a legislative initiative under which investment projects on natural gas storage may become of national importance. The Senate is expected to vote on another initiative, on the implementation of programmes by the National Cybersecurity Directorate aimed at identifying vulnerabilities in the IT systems operated by public institutions. Under the aforementioned initiative, identifying any security breaches is to be rewarded.
DAY Radio Romania celebrates 98 years since its first broadcast on November 1. The first transmission on November 1, 1928, by the Society of Radiotelephonic Broadcasting, as it was called back then, was marked on Friday through a concert given by the National Radio Orchestra, an ensemble whose history goes back to the early days of the public radio. Back in 1928, in order to respond to the mission of cultural promotion the public radio had assumed, the Radio Orchestra was established. Later it changed its name into the National Radio Orchestra. Also on this occasion, over October 26 and 27, the news agency RADOR declared a day of Open Doors for students in journalism. Radio Romania Music Awards are to take place on Monday, an event, which is expected to bring together the best pop and rock singers in Romania now.
RIOTS Hundreds of thousands took to the streets in France on Saturday. The protesters, whose number was lower than in the previous protest rallies, asked for pay and pension rises, more money for education and healthcare, for reducing the fiscal burden on employees, higher taxes for the rich and the companies making huge profits. The protests eventually turned violent when aggressive groups started throwing Molotov cocktails at the riot police. Authorities had deployed almost 70 thousand riot police and gendarmes in an attempt to discourage acts of violence and vandalism. Riot police units remained in alert a good part of the night in order to prevent further violent activities.
DRONES Romania’s Foreign Affairs Ministry says a just and durable peace in Ukraine is needed, in the context of the Saturday incident when two drones again entered Romania’s airspace in the north-east. The head of the Romanian diplomacy, Dan Neculaescu, has hailed the prompt and professional response of the Romanian Air Forces, which showed that Romania actively contributes to the consolidation of defence on the eastern flank of NATO. A similar message has been conveyed by Defence Minister, Radu Oprea, who has reiterated the fact that the safety of citizens and protecting the national airspace are priorities. Residents in six northeastern Romanian counties got alert messages after two drones had again violated the country’s airspace.
RADIO Radio Romania is a landmark for the Romanian society, Romanian President Nicusor Dan has said on the 98th anniversary of the Romanian public Radio.
