GOVERNMENT The Romanian government is preparing a 3rd set of fiscal measures to reduce the country’s budget deficit, for which the Cabinet could take responsibility before Parliament next week. The measures include a 10% cut of staff expenses or personnel downsizing in local administration, while similar cuts in personnel expenses are also considered in central administration institutions. However, the Social Democratic Party, one of the four members of the ruling coalition, has decided not to back salary cuts in the public sector and pleads for other means to cut expenses, such as public institution merging.

DIPLOMACY The relationship with Romania has never been more important, believes the nominee for US ambassador to Romania Darryl Nirenberg. He stated during his hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Romania is a key NATO ally, strategically located on the Black Sea and neighboring Ukraine. Darryl Nirenberg added that Romania offers great opportunities for US companies and can be a decisive factor in terms of energy resources. Darryl Nirenberg was nominated by president Donald Trump this May as US ambassador to Romania and is going through several procedural stages until validation by the US Senate. He promised to deepen the partnership with Romania in all areas.

MOURNING The Republic of Moldova observes a day of national mourning today, in memory of Ilie Ilaşcu, one of the emblematic leaders of the national liberation movement, who passed away on Monday aged 73. Viewed as a symbol of the fight for Moldova’s independence and integrity, Ilie Ilaşcu caught Europe’s attention after being detained for years by the illegal breakaway Transnistrian authorities. Ilie Ilaşcu was the leader of the Popular Front, the Tiraspol branch, and in 1992 he took part alongside Moldovan forces in the fights against the separatists. In the summer of 1992, Ilaşcu was arrested and sentenced to death by the separatist regime. His sentence was later commuted, before being released in 2001, following international pressure. Ilie Ilaşcu will be buried at the Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest.

WELFARE Romania scores 6.91 out of 10 in the first edition of the Welfare Barometer, a survey by the Welfare Alliance (ABS), based on official data for last year, which integrates 3 key dimensions: education, health and social welfare. According to the report, the result places Romania above Bulgaria (6.69), but below the other countries in the region, e.g. the Czech Republic (7.84), Poland (7.81), Slovakia (7.25) and Hungary (7.01). Romania sees the greatest challenges in terms of health, especially prevention, risk factors and mental health. In this respect, Romania is ahead of Hungary, but behind the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Bulgaria. In education, Romania continues to face difficulties in terms of educational level, access to education, digital skills and struggles with early dropout, according to the report. As for social welfare, this is the best performing of the 3 dimensions, due to good results in terms of physical safety, community cohesion and life satisfaction.

UKRAINE The US might ask Ukraine to give up territory and reduce its military, according to a peace plan allegedly negotiated in secret by Washington and Moscow. A Pentagon team is in Kyiv and will meet with president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss peace. Washington has already signaled to the Ukrainian leader that Ukraine must accept the new peace plan, sources quoted by Reuters say. Washington has not yet confirmed the existence of such a plan, which several international media say was negotiated by special envoys of presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The 28-point plan is said to be inspired by president Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. Kyiv has consistently rejected such demands, which for Ukrainians are tantamount to capitulation. Any plan to end the war in Ukraine will need the support of Ukrainians and Europeans to work, the EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said today, an opinion also supported by the foreign ministers of the member states.

FOOTBALL Romania’s national football team will find out today its opponent in the play-off semi-finals, as well as the teams it may face in the final for a seat in the World Championship. The play-off draw takes place at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich. Romania still has a chance to qualify for next year’s World Cup in the play-offs. To reach the final tournament, the national team must win 2 matches, the semi-final and the final, both played in one leg. The semi-final is scheduled for March 26, 2026, and the final for March 31.
