The acting president of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Parliamentary Assembly, Călin Popescu Tăriceanu, and speaker of the Romanian Senate, has today given a speech before the organization members in which he said that the strategic binder of their cooperation should remain the Black Sea. Tăriceanu said that, given the current geopolitical and economic context, one should not underestimate the region’s advantages, namely an area measuring 20 million sq. m., a population of more than 350 million inhabitants and its geo-strategic importance. The statement was made in the opening of the 46th edition of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Parliamentary Assembly. The event will bring to Bucharest, until Friday, 76 MPs, representing 12 states in the Black Sea region.

The leadership of the Bucharest-Ilfov Inspectorate for Emergency Situations was suspended Wednesday following an internal investigation that revealed that the institution knew about the activities taking place in the Colectiv Bucharest-based club, but did not made any verifications. Also on Wednesday the General Prosecutor’s Office announced that prosecutors changed the legal qualification in the case of the Colectiv club owners from bodily harm to manslaughter. 60 people have died following the fire of October 30th in the Colectiv nightclub in Bucharest. 38 people injured are still in hospitals from Bucharest and 29 in other hospitals from aboard.

The Moldovan politicians, who have been trying for several weeks to set up a new parliamentary majority, on Wednesday were urged by Brussels officials to start negotiations unconditionally and reset the governing alliance that should set the priorities for the future government. The priorities should focus on real pro-European reforms. The talks of the Moldovan President, Nicolae Timofti, with parliamentary groups meant to designate a candidate for the prime minister position were postponed for Friday. The former executive led by the Liberal Democrat Valeriu Streleţ was dismissed at the end of October through a no-confidence motion tabled by the Socialist and Communist opposition backed by the Democrats, which led to the dismantling of the so-called pro-European alliance made up of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Democratic Party. The Constitutional Court decided that the Moldovan Parliament should be dissolved unless it manages to validate a new government by the end of January 2016.

28 counties in the center, southwest and northeast of Romania, accounting for two thirds of the territory are totally or partially under the code yellow alert for rain and snowfalls, valid until Friday morning. Locally, in the northeast and center, and on extensive areas in the mountains, snowfalls and sleet will be reported. Rainfalls will be predominant in the south and southeast. The highs of the day range from minus 1 to 9 degrees C. The noon reading in Bucharest was 4 degrees C.

Romania is a country still affected by the underground economy and 28% of the country’s GDP, that is almost 30 billion euros, are channeled into this type of economy, said Thursday in Bucharest Cătălin Creţu, a regional director of Visa Europe for Romania, Croatia ad Slovenia. According to him, the underground economy is one of the main barriers in the way of consolidating a sustainable economy. If the tax collection rate by means of cards reached 30%, about 23 million lei could be saved to the budget, Cătălin Creţu underlined. The first banking card in Romania was issued 20 years ago in August 1995.
