Cooperation – Russia is constantly testing the resolve of NATO member states, but the Alliance shows that it is determined to defend the Eastern Flank, the German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said in Bucharest on Tuesday. He assessed that Romanian-German economic relations are at a high level, but can still be developed, including in the field of tourism or energy supply. In turn, the Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Ţoiu thanked for the support that Germany offered for the safety of Romania’s airspace and also recalled the bilateral economic collaboration. Germany ranks first both in terms of trade with Romania and in terms of foreign investments, the Romanian official said after talks with her German counterpart. According to the Romanian Foreign Ministry, the German minister’s visit to Bucharest marks 145 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
IMF – The International Monetary Fund has revised downward its estimates for the growth of the Romanian economy this year, to 1%, from 1.6% as forecast in April and 3.3% as was the advance indicated in October last year, shows the latest ‘World Economic Outlook’ report published on Tuesday by the international financial institution. The IMF also halved its estimates for the advance of Romania’s GDP next year, to 1.4%, from 2.8% as forecast in the spring. As for the country’s current account deficit, the IMF estimates that it will only be reduced to 8% of the GDP this year, compared to a decrease to 7.6% of the GDP forecast in the spring. The forecasts were published on the occasion of the autumn meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, which are taking place this week in Washington. Romania is represented in the US by the Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare.
Operation – The Romanian frigate “Regina Maria” (Queen Marie) returned on Tuesday to the military port of Constanta (on the Black Sea Coast) after participating in the NATO SEA GUARDIAN Operation carried out in the Mediterranean Sea. According to the Romanian Naval Forces, during the almost 50 days of the mission, the frigate carried out over 220 interrogations of commercial ships that transited the area of responsibility and traveled approximately 6,200 nautical miles. It participated in this mission with a crew of 243 soldiers. At the same time, the IAR 330 Puma Naval helicopter on board the frigate carried out flight activities to monitor the central area of the Mediterranean Sea. By participating, for the eighth time, in the NATO SEA GUARDIAN Operation, the Romanian Naval Forces contribute to fulfilling the country’s commitment to the international effort of strengthening maritime security in the south-eastern area of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Tennis – The Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian qualified on Tuesday for the round of 16 of the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka (Japan), which has total prizes worth about 275,000 dollars, after defeating the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto in two sets. Cristian will face the winner of the match pitting Katie Volynets (USA) against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (Spain) in the second round. Also on Wednesday, Cristian will play in the doubles, in the first round, alongside Serbian Olga Danilovic, against the pair Nao Hibino (Japan)/Katarzyna Piter (Poland). Gabriela Ruse and the American Ashlyn Krueger will also play in the doubles, against the pair Ana Blinkova (Russia)/Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy). In the singles, Sorana Cîrstea qualified for the round of 16, where she will meet Katie Boulter (Great Britain). (LS)
