SUMMIT – The President of Romania, Nicuşor Dan, is today attending the 7th meeting of the European Political Community in Copenhagen, Denmark. 47 heads of state and government are discussing European security, in the context in which more and more countries are accusing Russia of starting a hybrid war. Recently, the airspace of several states, including Romania, has been frequently violated by drones or Russian military aircraft. Radio Romania’s correspondent reports from Copenhagen that this morning’s plenary session will be followed by round tables focused, among other things, on traditional and hybrid threats, economic security and migration. President Dan will take part in a panel addressing security developments in Europe and aspects related to resilience. On the sidelines of the meeting, he will also have bilateral meetings. On Wednesday, also in Copenhagen, Nicuşor Dan attended an informal summit of the European Union.
BUDGET – The Romanian Government on Wednesday operated the first budget adjustment this year, which the Finance Minister says will bring the state budget into a realistic projection area. Minister Alexandru Nazare said that both expenses and revenues are evaluated correctly, and the deficit target taken into account is 8.4%. The additional funds cover essential expenses with pensions, salaries and social welfare, and part of the newly allocated funds will be used to pay interest on previous state loans. The rest of the funds will be channeled into investments. The Finance Minister also said that, next month, the Ministry will start drafting the state budget for next year and that he will make sure the budget will provide for fewer expenses compared to this year.
GOVERNMENT – Romanian citizens, men and women aged 18-35, will be able to request the Defense Ministry to participate, if they wish, in a basic military training program, according to a draft law on the agenda of today’s government meeting. The training will last four months, during which volunteers will also receive an allowance equivalent to three average gross salaries. The Government is also expected to discuss a draft decree to improve social dialogue by promoting collective negotiations. These are intended to improve the working and living conditions of employees. The law is estimated to improve the legislative framework of social dialogue, make it more flexible and encourage collective negotiations at all levels, by better informing employers and workers about their rights and obligations.
CATHEDRAL – Less than a month remains until the great consecration of the National Cathedral in Bucharest. All the scaffolding inside the new Orthodox Cathedral has been dismantled, all the mosaic works that the team of artists had to carry out by the end of the month have been completed and, by Saturday at the latest, the 27 automated bronze doors of the Cathedral will be rendered fully operational. The idea of building an Orthodox Cathedral emerged at the end of the 19th century, when authorities realized that no church in Bucharest was large enough to accommodate all those who attend services on special occasions or for other solemn celebrations. The project was relaunched in the 2000s, and the cornerstone of the National Cathedral was laid in November 2007, with construction works starting at the end of 2010. Pope Francis visited the National Cathedral, still under construction, during his visit to Romania on May 31, 2019.
FOOTBALL – Romanian football champions FCSB are tonight playing Young Boys Bern of Switzerland in the second round of the Europa League group phase. FCSB started the competition with a win, defeating Go Ahead Eagles of the Netherlands, score 1-0. On the other hand, Universitatea Craiova is tonight taking on Rakow Czestochowa of Poland away from home in Conference League. (VP)
